I'm a part of it. Not separate from it. I walk on the ground and the ground's walked on by me, I breathe the air and change it, I am entirely interconnected with the world.

solitaire
A black-and-white photo of a nude person seated on the floor against a black background, knees drawn to chest, arms wrapped around legs, head bowed. Hair partially obscures the face. Bracelets on one wrist, faint marks on forearm. Soft light highlights shoulders and limbs; deep shadows create a mood of vulnerability and introspection.

Just the sight of flowers stretching as far as the eye can see In the wide avenues of well-tended gardens, And already we feel That life is easy. Fernando Pessoa
An Impressionist-style oil painting by Claude Monet, ‘Main Path in the Garden at Giverny’ (Allée principale du jardin de Giverny), c. 1902. A wide gravel path runs down the centre of the picture into the distance, flanked by dense flowerbeds in vibrant shades of violet, red, pink and white. On either side, trees and climbing plants arch over the path, forming a natural canopy of leaves with patches of light filtering through. In the background, a rose-covered archway is visible, behind which a reddish building can be glimpsed. The brushwork is loose and patchy, typical of French Impressionism. The signature ‘Claude Monet’ appears in the bottom right-hand corner.

Koyasan, Japan, in the rain. Photography by Al Case
Captured by photographer Al Case on Mount Kōya (Kōyasan), Japan, this atmospheric photograph highlights a heavy downpour cascading from the wooden eaves and guttering in the immediate foreground. Through the veil of falling rain, a traditional stone lantern (tōrō) emits a soft, warm glow against a blurred backdrop of lush green foliage and quiet temple grounds. The shallow depth of field brings the crisp, falling streams of water into sharp focus while softening the sacred mountain sanctuary behind it, capturing the quiet, contemplative solitude of Kōyasan in the rain.

Hiroshima, Japan.
The composition is dominated by an expansive, fiery canopy of Japanese maples (momiji) in various stages of seasonal transformation. The leaves blaze in brilliant gradients of crimson, burnt orange, and soft peach, forming a dense, lacy ceiling that filters the soft daylight and casts a warm, ethereal glow over the sacred grounds below.

The image is beautifully structured to lead the eye along a stone-paved devotional path that winds deeper into the mountain sanctuary. In the immediate foreground, the entrance to this path is flanked by a pair of heavy, weathered stone lanterns (tōrō), their classic tiered caps dusted lightly with fallen red leaves. From this vantage point, the stone pathway curves gently forward, transitioning into a low, arched stone bridge with simple wooden handrails that crosses a hidden stream or depression in the garden floor. The ground itself is heavily blanketed with a soft mosaic of shed foliage, blurring the boundary between the stone architecture and the surrounding forest.

Nestled quietly into the hillside on the left side of the path is a traditional wooden pavilion or sub-temple building, its dark timber walls and tiled, gabled roof providing a somber, grounding element against the vibrant foliage. The building features an elegant, open-arched window that reveals a glimpse of its shadowed interior, hinting at a space reserved for quiet contemplation. Beyond the bridge, the path disappears into a lush undergrowth of dark green shrubs and manicured mosses, leading toward a stone staircase that climbs higher into the misty, maple-choked valley.
