After a grey and stormy morning, the light in my studio this afternoon is remarkable, pouring through the cabin's big windows. Lottie is curled on a blanket under my desk as I work. She's a good studio companion.

Each writer in the book chose one or more images from Brian's collection of Green Women paintings, and then gave a name and a voice to each of these mysterious figures in wild and wonderful ways. Here's Brian's introduction to the volume, explaining the inspiration behind it:

Thank you to everyone posting about Brian & Wendy Froud's new book, containing 72 new paintings with literary responses by 37 women writers of diverse backgrounds, landscapes & mythic traditions. Having worked on the project for the last two years, we've all been moved by the enthusiastic response.

It was a honour to help Brian & Wendy Froud (artists, folklorists, and the puppet film designers behind The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth) to turn their vision for this book into reality. Happy Book Publication Day to both of them, and to all the brilliant women writers who contributed to the volume.

An autumn blessing by Danielle Barlow, with a watercolour painting of a bagder: When hips and haws bring dwindling days and fiery leaves set the land ablaze, kindle the fire and welcome all whose hearts respond to autumn's call.
