I was there, I watched it happen over the course of my lifetime, and during the same period crime has done nothing but go down across the board, except among the ruling class

Kayin I'm sure would tear me a new one for saying this but uhhhh this is why Smash Bros fights are inherently more dynamic than traditional fighting game fights - fighting games have one axis of positioning (basically), and Smash has two. That simple

When you dodge an attack by changing your position, you are also affecting the future of the battle, changing how the enemy has to respond to hit you later, making your future options more or less limited depending on your strategy. Positioning is offense and defense combined

And, I also think that ultimately spacing provides a more dynamic design space, specifically because timing based combat inherently forces the player into reactivity. When you are spacing, you are responding but you are also actively affecting the battle

The distillation of timing combat is the rhythm game, and the distillation of spacing combat is the SHMUP

FakeKraid @terrainfirma.bsky.social · 12h
This is more or less the exact same conclusion I came to when pondering this subject after Silksong came out and Kayin posted about how the combat in it asks you for spacing rather than timing

I have yet to see any evidence that Asia likes generative AI any better, given that every single Asian artist I know on this site puts a giant "no training generative AI on my art" watermark on all their art

Well, I haven't called the US a civilized nation in a long time, but after this I don't think the US will be able to credibly call itself one anymore. This is crossing a line that no Democrat administration is going to be able to uncross no matter how much it wants to

ultimately, creative depth isn't really about originality, but about exploring fruitful contradictions. That's both why, for example, there's never been a perfect JRPG and also JRPGs remain a rich vein of creative effort - because it is a genre founded on and full of fruitful contradictions

The metroidvania genre in particular has always had it tough because the games that codified it were both perfect already. There was no room for improvement on the genre the moment it came into existence. That's why all notable metroidvanias since have been some form of hybrid

Base and superstructure. While the base persists, the superstructure cannot be changed. After the base is changed, the superstructure can and will be changed to match

Bigotry will not be automatically eliminated by ending capitalism, no, but until capitalism is ended we cannot even begin to end it

It's easy to solve, stop using AI and eliminate sexism from medical practice. The only hard part is overthrowing capitalism so the latter part can be done

It's like when they talk about how Engels was a capitalist and sponsored Marx's research, like no shit Sherlock how else was Marx going to have the time and energy to read every newspaper and academic journal ever written up to that point so he could arrange it all into a unifying theory

There's a character in it who feels very akin to you, at least to me; it's a strong enough impression that I feel like I don't even have to name them and you would know who, even if you ultimately don't agree with me

Japan isn't one nation. It has internal subaltern nations just like the United States' indigenous First Nations - the Ainu, the Okinawans, and the people of Ryuukyu

Now, it may be that something they do is unhelpful or unsuccessful, like the actions of the IRA during the troubles. But that's a matter of strategy, not ethics. It's an entirely different heuristic

It is actually impossible for a colonized people to do anything wrong against the people colonizing them. Whatever they choose to do is automatically right and just and proper, by definition, because they are the ones doing it. Only after they have been liberated is it meaningful make judgments
