Sound the klaxon, I have received my copy of Kevin M. Levin's new book "A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw". Ping @civilwarmemory.bsky.social and @uncpress.bsky.social
Front cover of Kevin M. Levin's new book "A Glorious Fate: The Life and Legacy of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw".

A vivid new portrait of one of the Union cause’s great martyrs

Robert Gould Shaw (1837–1863) is best known as the heroic colonel who led the 54th Massachusetts Infantry—one of the first regiments of Black soldiers in the Civil War—in its famous ill-fated charge against Confederate Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. Shaw’s sacrifice has been commemorated in monuments, books, and the award-winning film Glory. But before he became a martyr for the Union cause and emancipation, Shaw was a privileged young man who showed little interest in the reform movements that defined his parents' lives or in the moral crisis over slavery that was tearing the nation apart. Volunteering to serve as a duty, he awakened gradually and fitfully to the demands of conscience and command. Only in death was Shaw transformed into the champion for freedom his abolitionist parents hoped he would be.

The first biography of Shaw in a quarter century, A Glorious Fate traces his transformation from a rebellious son into one of the Civil War’s most celebrated heroes. Acclaimed historian Kevin M. Levin also reveals the sacrifice and service of the African American men who fought and died for their freedom afresh through Shaw’s eyes. Though Shaw never fully reconciled his own racial prejudices, Levin shows how the Civil War changed the young colonel as it did the nation.

6th book purchase of 2026. PESHMERGA: FACING DEATH - The First Hand account of the italian volunteer that fought ISIS Paperback – 20 May 2021 by Alex Pineschi www.amazon.com.au/dp/B096CXLRL...
PESHMERGA, this is how the Kurds call their valiant soldiers who for decades have sacrificed themselves in the name of freedom. Those who come face to face with death to defend someone else. From this the term, PESH (front) and MERGA (death).
Alex Pineschi was the first Italian volunteer to have fought Isis in northern Iraq, by that time torn apart by the advance of the Islamic State, alongside the fearless Peshmerga warriors. Alex and his Peshmerga from Task Force Black, the Kurdish Police anti-terrorism unit, faced the Islamic militiamen in their strongholds in Kirkuk and Mosul, freeing hostages and capturing dangerous terrorists, until finally defeating them. Having survived the battle and having come to the end of this bloody war, Alex returns home to face his greatest battle.

From the report: Independent candidates are excluded from the ideological model entirely.
Independent candidate flows
Independent candidates are excluded from the ideological model entirely. Their preference flows are highly
individual — a teal community independent in a wealthy urban seat has very different flow patterns from a
rural independent — so they are handled separately with division-specific flow data (see below).
1. Division-specific Independent flows: If the same Independent candidate appeared in the 2025
preference data, we use their actual observed flow pattern. This covers most teal community inde-
pendents who are re-contesting.
2. National Independent averages by context: If no local data exists (e.g. a new independent), we
use the average Independent to party flow rates, drawn from either the “Independent-competitive”
context pool (if another Independent holds ≥10% of the remaining vote) or the “standard” context
pool.
3. Party to Independent flows: When a party candidate is eliminated and an Independent is still in
the count, the flow rate to that Independent is looked up from the 2025 flow data by division and
party family. This is necessarily division-specific since the attractiveness of an independent depends
on who they are.

Die in battle, do not despair: the Indians on Gallipoli 1915 by Peter Stanley

About 1,600 of the Indians who served on Gallipoli died, in actions at Gurkha Bluff and Hill 60. They took part in terrible, failed attacks, at Gully Ravine and Gully Spur and in the climactic attempt in August to seize the summit of Sari Bair – one of the Gurkhas’ most cherished battle honours. Though commemorated on the great memorial to the missing at Cape Helles (because most Indians’ bodies were cremated or, actually, lost) they are practically invisible on Gallipoli today. The Indian story of Gallipoli has barely been told before. Not only is this the first book about their part in the campaign to be published in the century since 1915, but it also tells their story in new and unexpected ways. Though inescapably drawing on records created by the force’s British officers, it strives to recapture the experience of the formerly anonymous sepoys, gunners and drivers, introducing Indians of note – Mit Singh, Gambirsing Pun, Kulbahadur Gurung, and Jan Mohamed – alongside the more familiar British figures such as Cecil Allanson, who led his Gurkhas to the crest of Sari Bair at dawn on 9 August 1915. It explores for the first time the remarkably positive relationship that grew on Gallipoli between Indians and Anzacs, and includes a complete list of the Indian Army dead commemorated on the Helles Memorial on Gallipoli. Professor Peter Stanley, one of Australia’s most distinguished military social historians, has drawn on an extensive range of unpublished evidence, including official and private records in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and India to tell the story of the Indian experience of Gallipoli that has waited a century to be told.

Revolutionary Warfare
How the Algerian War Made Modern Counterinsurgency

by Terrence G. Peterson

Revolutionary Warfare investigates how efforts to counter a revolution could also be revolutionary. The Algerian War fractured the French Empire, destroyed the legitimacy of colonial rule, and helped launch the Third Worldist movement for the liberation of the Global South. By tracing how French generals, officers, and civil officials sought to counter Algerian independence with their own project of radical social transformation, Terrence G. Peterson reveals that the conflict also helped to transform the nature of modern warfare.

The French war effort was never defined solely by repression. As Peterson details, it also sought to fashion new forms of surveillance and social control that could capture the loyalty of Algerians and transform Algerian society. Hygiene and medical aid efforts, youth sports and education programs, and psychological warfare campaigns all attempted to remake Algerian social structures and bind them more closely to the French state. In tracing the emergence of such programs, Peterson reframes the French war effort as a project of armed social reform that sought not to preserve colonial rule unchanged, but to revolutionize it in order to preserve it against the global challenges of decolonization.

Revolutionary Warfare demonstrates how French officers' efforts to transform warfare into an exercise in social engineering not only shaped how the Algerian War unfolded from its earliest months, but also helped to forge a paradigm of warfare that dominated strategic thinking during the Cold War and after: counterinsurgency.

Memoirs Of War: Dien Bien Phu by
General Vo Nguyen Giap

The Vietnamese victory at Dien Bien Phu in May 1954, with the killing or capturing of over 16,000 enemy forces, sealed the defeat of French colonialism in Indochina. Complete with detailed accounts, maps, and photos, Giap's memoirs depicts concretely how a small and weak nation can overcome a stronger force. The book emphasizes the importance of creativity, intelligence, and superior strategy based on support from the entire nation/people (the alliance of oppressed classes) in winning war.

Le Putsch d'Alger by Maurice Vaïsse.

Radio-Algiers, April 22, 1961: “This is Radio France. The army has taken control of Algeria and the Sahara…” This is the beginning of the generals’ putsch, and of the gripping account given by Maurice Vaïsse in this book. The event is brief: four days, five nights. But it points to a longer period: that of the simmering crisis within the army, which led to this pivotal episode of the Algerian War, and also to its consequences.

After 1940, the distinction between the military and the political became blurred: the Second World War and the conflicts of decolonization reversed these roles, following repeated crises pitting the army against the nation, culminating in the putsch. Why did it fail? What were its lasting effects? The aim of this book is to assess the significance of the event and to place it within the context of French and international history.

Maurice Vaïsse here revisits an investigation he began forty years ago, this time with the benefit of previously inaccessible archives. His book contains both facts and rigorous analysis. One also perceives the emotion of a man intimately familiar with Algeria—he was born there and was there in 1961—and whose heart seems to catch in his throat at this tragedy.
Through documents and testimonies, he restores the human dimension of the putsch, a constant presence: in the attitude and words of General de Gaulle, the expectations of the people, the motivations and behavior of the general officers—along with the almost tragic dimension of the conflict between duty and loyalty, and the anxieties surrounding "honor."

A definitive work on the putsch and on de Gaulle.
