Am just discovering the term “functional unemployment,” and learning that this is the actual jobs data that we need to be hearing about.

I’m in a conundrum. If I share all the ways I am growing my fine art career, people assume I’m no longer looking for work in animation. And if I post that I AM indeed looking for work, then people lose faith in my fine art career. This is not a zero-sum situation. My talent can span mediums!

You may THINK generating images with AI for your business doesn’t undercut your sales, but it 100% does!! Visual artists, how can we come together and help others make this connection?

000

Teri Hendrich C. @terihendrich.bsky.social · 11/05/2026

Visual artists are people with needs who like to do things like get haircuts and eat food. In other words, WE ARE PEOPLE WHO PATRONIZE OTHER BUSINESSES that we can only afford to do off our work of creating images.

So I was sitting in what was meant to be a supportive group setting for entrepreneurs - of which I am now because it’s been next to impossible for me to find work in animation for the last two years. As I finished explaining the fact that I am a visual artist and that I am doing my best…

Visual artists really need to come together and create some sort of PR campaign for themselves in the face of AI because I just witnessed an unreal level of cognitive dissonance when it comes to the acceptance that others have with taking work away from human artists. 🧵

Some people have asked if I’ve left the industry. I would say the industry left me. I still apply to gigs but it’s just been completely dry for 1.5 years. If people are going to pay for my paintings, matching my animation salary, then heck yeah, that’s what you’ll find me doing until things change.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with fellow animation professional turned documentary photographer, Afonso Salcedo to share the career path that brought me to this moment where I now find myself supporting a life in LA purely with my own work as a fine art painter. I don’t think this is targeted as I have a non-political account & posted a very benign video sharing my art this morning plus a story, and I’m in the same boat with zero views. I can see from another account that those new videos are currently hidden from public view like I had never posted them.

Disney’s values have always been the same. Since the days of Walt - attempting to impede his employees from forming a union to his fixation on creating animatronic characters. The goal was always to get around paying for human labor.
