You'd be surprised that this act of "ransom plots" still continues, with slithers of land registered between a development & the next plot. With the owner of the ransom plot demanding extortionate fees for utilities or access across the plot It's becoming harder in the era of digital geospatial

It was also the venue for one of the most remarkable & revolting "party trick" of one of my fellow draffies, which involved a cold scotch pie that had been congealing on one of those glass bar shelves since lunchtime I couldn't possibly recount it here, on the basis of good taste and common decency

Nearest pub to my first place of work in the early 80s.... Was marched there by the older draftsman with my first pay packet to get a round in. I was underage Other local bars were the "Chessboard" (?) and on W.Regent Street, "Hurricanes" where us cool kids loitered with pints of Fuestenburg.

Reposting this in the hope someone can help. So far I've had no luck, and even Celtic Football Club have ignored my emails. I'm getting a little cross-eyed looking at the grainy images available, and I'm beginning to think it might be 29 and 88 set within a shamrock?

It was a whole entertainment venue. Interestingly in the 1920s the ground floor stalls were raised and the orchestra pit was floored over. This indicated the introduction of the "Talkies" and the end of the silent era. 2/2

After the fire that nearly destroyed the whole cinema in the mid 80s, I (as a trainee architectural draftsman) surveyed the burnt out interior. The original building had a winter garden/dance hall on top, a flower shop in the mezzanine, a barber and hairdresser salons in the basement. 1/2

Any fire in Glasgow should be reported that; "The building burnt down, and miraculously the only thing that survived was the insurance policy."

The Luftwaffe raiding west of Scotland would fly from bases in Norway & Denmark, over the Cairngorms & down the west coast before turning east up the Clyde valley to their targets. Any ordnance left over was randomly dropped east of Glasgow & is why places like Rutherglen were hit by isolated bombs

A fabulous book that details those early days of WW2 on Glasgow, Greenock and Clydebank is "This Time of Crisis" by Andrew Jeffery. Highly recommended if you can source it, the accounts of bravery & self sacrifice are documented, but also criminality & petty-mindness too among the horror of war.

I would guess yes then, however in "The Tenement Revealed" by John Gilbert, it states a decade later that first floor oriel windows appeared on the houses on Claremont Terrace.

It would be wonderful to see a revival of Peter Arnott's play about Muir staged by The Tron in the 1980s. One for @alancumming.bsky.social , as he was part of the scene then and would have seen Russell Hunter's performance.

Not only is any part of Argyle St not pedestrianised, it's also two-way. I remember when the initial one way traffic system was introduced in the early 80s and the complaints from motorists..... Similar to those same complaints over every traffic management scheme and plan since.

No one is saying that. Aesthetically, it's a dreary option. Consider the design of the New Gorbals in the 2000s, they were either imaginative or referenced the Glasgow Tenement tradition. This is now Ai architecture.

AGT's GCF church, looking worse for wear these days, evidenced by this rear elevation view. Sandstone crumbling & foliage bursting out in all areas, and of course surrounded & dwarfed by glass boxes. @thisismyglasgow.bsky.social @pastglasgow.co.uk @lostglasgow.bsky.social @oakroyd.bsky.social

My mother as child in the 1930s, remembers the fund raising efforts of parishioners for the new church building, "Buy a Brick for St Columbkilles". She married the auld fella there in 1959, and they still regularly attend in their auld age.

I can trace my direct paternal ancestors as Calton residents; an Irish emigrant (weaver) in 1800 to my great grandmother in 1950. 150 years and generation after generation barely moved from the streets around the adjacent Green Street.

A statue of Liberty overlooking Queen's Park on the Southside of Glasgow from the top of W.M. Whyte's 1885 French Renaissance style tenement. This makes it marginally older than it's US equivalent, which was only dedicated in the following year. Cont./ #glasgow #sculpture #tenement #architecture

It's interesting that it drops from 3 stories on Pollokshaws Rd to 2 on Butterfield Rd. I don't think this is because the builder ran out of masonry, which is unlikely, but as it abuts the vertical railway cutting, it's more likely structural, & the dead load of the actual tenement on that cutting.

My great grandparents top floor tenement flat in Patrick overlooked Meadowside, & my dad remembers as a wee boy spending time watching the work going on from their kitchen window. By then, the 1930s, it was mainly a fitting out and repair yard for existing shipping.
