Lil' ones also said that if you put your ear up to the dollies bug mouth, you can up and here the 'Cadas song, and a soft scent of Honeysuckle would tickle up on you' nose...” ©️ Rick Powell 2026

Some of the girls of the courtin' age used to tell that if you came across those dollies of 'ers, you would stroke its locks tree times and call 'Ol Gammy, and she would get the love you seek, Din't know anyon' that did, though. Burnt wood would be in thos' locks that felt cold to the touch.

Most of the kin would toss them in the hearth fire right on up away when they found them, much to the little folk cries.

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Kids bein' as kids be, they used to sneak sometimes out to her place, long after. A few came on back with a few o' her dollies, and could hear her whisper through the trees.

100

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Made dollies for the kiddies sum'times, even. Legend was she could make the Honeysuckle bloom, and the 'Cadas sing. That was until others that d'nt care for Gammy and her ways started the bad talk. Bad talk led'n to her getting hung up right up behin' her cabin, it did.

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Lonny Sawyer's mother told us how some folks say she was e'en here before the settlers. They used to be a time when Gammy used to help the folk with herbs and such when the little 'uns got to being sick and e'en talk how she saved the life of one or two.

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

“...and it was my grandaddy that used to tell me tales about Ol' Gammy when I was a young 'un. 'Y'all stay away from those deep woods, now!' he would scream at us when we were bad. Took a switch to us, he did, if we even joked about goin' in thar.

It is incomplete due to the unexplained fire that broke out on the East Wing in 1992, which resulted in irreparable damage to most of the exhibits there and one death. Below is a portion of the transcript of that audio:

100

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Before that, there is a taped interview with an unnamed elderly woman of the town of Archer's Bend in the Tempterine county located deep in the heart of Massachusetts from the late 1950's. That interview, or portions thereof, are property of the Massachusetts Museum of Natural History.

Rick Powell @tenebraerick.bsky.social · 21/07/2026

Ok, everyone. Here she is! Little is known about the legend of Ol' Gammy. The last published piece about her is in a few mentions in Dr. Alphonso DeLiass' study of Massachusetts folklore titled Northwestern Myths & Fables. (More in comments)

Started on her hair today. I named her Ol’ Gammy. There is a legend about her. More later:
