In response to the current ‘REnaissance,’ House of Leaves is curating an anthology of essays exploring the transformative legacy of Resident Evil. Please submit proposals by 12 October via holpublishing.com/contact — full details in attached note... #residentevil #book #horror #writers #authors
Umbrella logo on grey / black background with text in red and white: Resident Evil; Call for Submissions; Deadline: 12 October 2026; Read more.
2026 is a huge, if not el gigante, year for Capcom’s Resident Evil. As global celebrations continue to mark the 30th birthday of the franchise—and, arguably, survival horror—the first half of 2026 has witnessed an outbreak of content and development news.

In February, the ninth mainline entry, Requiem, became the fastest-selling game in the series (hawking five million copies in the first five days alone). This was followed by Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi’s cryptic announcement of an (as yet unreleased) DLC story expansion, as well as an action mini-game, Leon Must Die Forever, which landed in May.

June’s Summer Game Fest revealed the remake rumours were true: the great Veronica will be awakened from her slumber in 2027. Requiem producer Masachika Kawata confirmed in July that Capcom plans to continue releasing Resident Evil titles annually, focusing on mainline entries and remakes to reshape the juicy lore of the series.

And looking forward to September, Zach Cregger's anxiously anticipated Resident Evil will end months of fan speculation, as the latest in a series of (so-far maligned) live-action adaptations.

On the back of the 30th anniversary’s retrospection, this escalated schedule and reconstruction has infected new audiences while provoking intense (and often divisive) discourse among fans—making the current ‘REnaissance’ an incredibly important period for interdisciplinary research. In response, House of Leaves is curating an anthology of essays exploring the transformative legacy of Resident Evil.

We therefore welcome proposals focusing on, but not limited to, the following areas:

Video games (including mainline games, remakes, side or mini-games, and DLCs):
The evolution of accessibility features and how they parallel in-game disability commentary through designated eras (classic; action; modern; modern / remake).
How dialogue, character intent, and lore are localised or altered in the process of translating original Japanese scripts for Wester…Otherness and exploitation (from traditional folklore to colonial tropes) in the depiction of isolated ‘exotic’ populations in Resident Evil 4 (2005; 2023), Resident Evil 5 (2009), and Village (2021).

Film + television (including live-action, CG-animated, and independent texts):
Drawing on the history and lore of zombies in popular culture to explore George A. Romero’s influence upon and direct connection to the franchise, from his Resident Evil 2 television commercial (1992) to his unrealised Resident Evil screenplay.
The relationship between the escalated scale and action-oriented focus of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil series (2002–2016) and the action gaming era (2005–2016), centring the revolutionary role played by Resident Evil 4 (2005).
Situating the production of Resurrection: A Biohazard Story (2026), a community-funded independent film featuring several actors from Resident Evil’s (1996) live-action opening segment, at the nexus of fandom and nostalgia to explore shared history, memory, and identity.
Narratological character development through the lens of trauma and neurodivergence.
How Capcom’s official short Evil Has Always Had a Name (2026) acts as a canonical crossroads, connecting the classic and modern / remake gaming eras.
The franchise’s stained relationship with live-action adaptation (theory, history, and process), culminating in a reception-focused review of the response to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil (2026).

Further material for consideration includes novelisations (video games; films); board games; cosplay + conventions; graphic novels; manga; manhua; merchandise; strategy + guide books etc.

If the above has you itching to write something tasty, reach out via our contact form at holpublishing.com/contact (selecting Submissions: Resident Evil) with:

an abstract outlining your proposed chapter, thesis, and selected texts (300–500 words);
an indicative bibliography;
