Aspiring writer, I write words about board games and war games, mostly for Tabletop Battles. Blog: allownofun.blogspot.com He/Him

I remember in 2013 being a bit squeamish about A Distant Plain being released: the war in Afghanistan was still ongoing at the time and I had friends that had fought there. Considering the above, I do find it a bit ghoulish to release Defiance, a game about a very recent, on-going conflict.

Bit of an interruption due to moving from Korea to Ireland, but this week I reviewed The Guerilla Generation from @gmtgames.bsky.social. Mild spoilers, but it's going to be on my best games I played in 2026 list. www.stuartellisgorman.com/blog/the-gue...

I would not consider myself someone who is likely to join the GMT Games’ COIN system fan club. I have never had a bad time playing a COIN game, and I have enjoyed most of my time with the system, but ...

We switched sides and tried Watchtower which I think was more interesting due to the wider playing field. I like how they felt very different in play, with the different assets and missions available.

Tried “Retreat from Rabaul” with a friend in Coast Watchers by @gmtgames.bsky.social, designed by @volko.bsky.social ! Enjoyed it quite a lot although I think some of the larger scenarios are going to be a bit more interesting. The allies won narrowly, and I’m keen to try other scenarios.

Cool! I have been delighted with it so far. I actually find Cuius even more interesting than GCACW, while also smoother. It adds interaction of operational maneuver with logistics - forage and winter quartering - & diplomacy - the patchwork allegiances to either Imperialist or Protestant causes.

My regular GCACW opponent bought a copy of Cuius Regio and we are planning to play it at some point. I’m very excited to try it since I want to see how a GCACW-like system works in a different conflict

"Why is Crokinole a board game but pool isn't?" who cares. say pool is a board game. drink deeply of the richness that is your birthright. become an insurgent to the categories that chain you. reject canon. write fanfiction that's better than anything jj abrams could ever dream.

Managed to get Caylus played again. You might have guessed that I have a deep love for Caylus as one of the classic euros. Also managed to get War of the Ring: The Card Game to the table and was pleasantly surprised at how playable it was.

Me and my friends meeting up to play board games this weekend and ended up with 5 people attending. We were looking for a mid-to-heavy euro and there are plenty that play 5, but do they play 5 well? Most euros don’t.

I totally agree with this point. I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to play everything from heavy euros, to complex wargames, to role playing games, to mega games and all in between. My tastes have somewhat crystallised but I’m glad that they were informed from a variety of genres.

I was interested at first when I saw this being advertised, but I think the deck-building nature of the game drove me off. I was hoping for a more directly competitive Galaxy Truckers, and this wasn't it.

Rewatched the entire LOTR extended edition and it mostly holds up, although I think Fellowship is still the best films and the latter films have some very dubious creative choices. It also doesn't help that my mind has been poisoned bycountless LOTR memes.

I had an interesting discussion with a friend of mine where the argument was that certain types of games shouldn't be made because they can be misunderstood or certain people would play them for enjoyment purposes only. This argument didn't hold a lot of water for me tbh.
