Listened to the latest episode of the Type Theory for All podcast (www.typetheoryforall.com/episodes/pl-...) which was absolutely great. Now have the following pinned on my office wall, lest I forget. Thanks, @shriram.bsky.social.
"And our goal in life needs to be to be able to beat the averaging machine. To be able to have a thought that the averaging machine could not produce, [...]

If all we're doing is what the averaging machine does, then we might as well be replaced by the averaging machine.

Right?"

[v2.0 preview:] #DuckDB’s recursive CTE engine now treats recursion as 1 long-lived computation: it retains eligible epoch-invariant state, chooses execution modes from exact frontier cardinalities and physical work, probes keyed state directly and gives `USING KEY ... UNION` changed-key semantics.

This is what renders SQL a declarative language: wherever a query expects a scalar or tabular value, you can place a subquery in (...) which computes that value. Nest without regret: Thomas and Alfons will untangle the mess for you. Modern relational engines rely on this work, like @duckdb.org.

Thank you, @pinartozun.bsky.social! I enjoyed the opportunity to shed light on Thomas Neumann's and Alfons Kemper's seminal work on systematic decorrelation of SQL subqueries in 2015 ("Unnesting Arbitrary Queries", btw-2015.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/res/proceedi...).
