NOVA is an important game for me. It wasn't always the game it is. When that burned down, it drove me to create the LUMEN system, and NOVA was the first game to come from that. LUMEN sort of "put me on the map" and NOVA was a really big part of it. So thank you for all your support today 💜

We've tried to build for that experience from top to bottom. The game has pre-written adventures that combine a sandbox feel with a flexible recommended approach. My hope is that GMs will feel like they can scale their prep based on available time, trust the book, and change on the fly at the table.

When designing games, I think a lot about my experience playing @gilarpgs.bsky.social' Slayers at Pax a few years ago. I'd bought the game that day. We played it in the hotel lobby at 10 pm. It was a rush to play -- the game is freaking amazing -- and I was impressed at how quickly we got going.

WESTWARD BOUND needed to be very different from THE LAST CARAVAN. As much as we loved the long journeys TLC asks for, we wanted a snappier experience. Westward Bound is built for one-shots, and built to be easy to pick up and play.

The fundamentals came easy. On a single hiking trip through an aspen supergrowth, my wife and I mapped out our character types, from the BIG FELLA to the FREAK, all the way to (of course) the CAT. We wanted players to feel that they could immediately jump into a role and feel at home.

From the second we made Last Caravan's "Good Boi" archetype, we perceived the delightful possibility of the all-dogs adventure. From Wes Anderson's "Isle of Dogs" to "Balto," there's so much humor and drama to be mined from stories of brave dogs going the distance for the humans who love them. (2/?)

It's a funny thing where I just am not interested in any sort of rehabilitation or reimagining of a dungeon crawler. I kind of see the whole project as suspect and non-essential to the medium, despite its huge prevalence. Hot take, maybe.
