saw someone talking about how we need to teach cosmology in a way that acknowledges that the Western scientific view is just one viewpoint and I started screaming internally

The data center water use is actually for baptizing all the new LLM instances. We should also add some baptism related Bible verses to the system prompt just in case.

when I type "2+2" into a calculator, is the calculator "doing addition", or is it just performing a sequence of electronic operations that only become addition when I interpret the end result?

like, the contrapositive of "being misogynist makes you ugly" is "beautiful people can't be misogynist" which uhhhhh

this feels like a somewhat more interesting example than addition because everyone knows how to do addition by hand, but I suspect that computing gamma by hand is much rarer

(I then asked another instance with tool calls, and then it used Python with math.gamma; when I told it to do it with only common functions, it computed gamma(30.902) using Stirling and then divided back down)

fwiw I just asked Claude Opus 5.5 to compute gamma(8.902) to the first decimal place without tool calls, and it got it; it claims it used the recurrence and computed gamma(1.902) using a Taylor series. obv no clue what it *actually* did but I doubt there's a secret tool call behind the scenes

it's definitely not clear that you can just abstract neurons to the extent that they become fancy perceptrons but what about doing it at the level of fundamental particles? obviously impossible to *actually* do this due to physical constraints but that's not the point

also in what world would you not have to double check the information from the insurer's website anyway lol

not directly related but I remember one time I contacted my insurance nurse line, she told me to go to urgent care, I asked "okay, where should I go" and every single one she gave me was closed for the night b/c it was like 10 PM

I remember I used to hate washing dishes, going through all the stacked-up pots and pans. But then one day I decided to really *focus* on the process, to not just shortcut it by using a dishwasher, to be present in the moment. To focus on what technology had robbed from us. And this is what I found:

i think if you think that an account that posts "hijab-inspired secular accessorization" and "'people of color' is a slur" is real and Says Something About Leftists and not someone pretending, then I think you're bad at detecting when you're being trolled

it's got to be like working at Anthropic but worse. coming up through the ranks you occasionally saw evidence of something strange and vast and when you make director they give you indisputable proof that the alien gods who created us thought weird black monster goo was sacred.

see I was thinking something wackier as in, like, oh yeah it turns out that Church-Turing is false and it turns out that the brain relies on post-Turing computation

the machine! @technical-transect.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
although the question then becomes "can we harness weird physics in computers"; e.g. even if true quantum randomness is indispensable you can buy a hardware quantum RNG in the silly limit, a brain is a computer that perfectly simulates a brain

like if I was going to do this I would give you a knob for controlling the kinetics and how it interacts with the # of bound edges so you can turn that to extremes and see what happens. I'd have something explaining why the crystals are always growing "up". etc
100
the machine! @technical-transect.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
or why there's always an "up" direction. it's just... not really a good explanation. it looks pretty but I don't really feel informed about anything.

or, like okay, bismuth.mino.mobi. looking at the about section I still have no idea *why* bismuth does that. it mentions a "melt" but doesn't provide context for whether the melt surrounds the crystal on all sides or what. there's no context for why the "bricks" don't keep attaching to the base

i actually did see someone justify it by saying that e.g. if a project has leaked code, it's impossible to verify that that isn't in the training set, whereas a human REing that project can say "yeah I didn't look at the leaked source"
