One wonders what would happen if someone were to defy local government by misappropriating funds from a liquor store cash register.

We've already shown that we aren't a serious country. Not because Trump is a blithering idiot, but because our system of checks and balances has almost completely failed to restrain him. We are no longer a nation of laws, rather a nation where the law serves those with wealth and power.

The Tapper book was an attempt to scapegoat Biden and avoid discussion of the real issue: Why does our electoral system allow a party (not part of government) to suppress a primary? Left has been running corporate Dem's hard since '16, they were desperate to avoid a real primary. Here we are.

Couldn't agree more. People are begging for leadership, but Democratic leaders serve donors, not the people. Trouble is neither party actually believes in democracy.

It's because changing policies might endanger their relationships with wealthy donors.

That Democrats were afraid to take the step that does NOT violate the constitution after Trump took several that DID, tells just about all we need to know. They are not the same, but they largely work for the same people - It's not voters.

Keep hearing about Democrats vs Republicans, but often it's really donors vs voters. See also: Data centers.

I like to say that Republicans blame big government and Democrats blame big business, trouble is while we were distracted by all the noise big government and big business got into bed together to screw the rest of us. :-)

Not to put too fine a point on it, but having been on the internet since the 1990s it sure is disappointing how things turned out. Advertising, rent-seeking and surveillance have ruined tech.

Couldn't agree more. This is why fascists do not care about accusations of falsehood or hypocrisy. These statements are about *power*, not any objective reality.

Read once that both Democrats and Republicans are loathe to admit how far right Clinton was. NAFTA, crime bill, a lot of deregulation, etc.

One, I completely agree that we need significant changes and two, I'm worried we'll get a repeat of the last time we had a Democratic president and both houses, which is that they formed a commission that couldn't agree on any recommendations so they did nothing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preside...

If one views Trump's monuments as not only being to himself, but also to the raw exercise of power by the ruling class, it would make clear the motivations of those arguing to keep them.

As AI is coming for my field I essentially see it as a tool for enforcing what management has wanted the whole time: Reduced quality in exchange for increased throughput. It is difficult to get skilled people who care about their craft to do bad work. At least, until you start firing them.

Yes. This idea is good and funny, but the interesting part is explaining why Democratic leadership is so afraid of these policy ideas: They work for corporate donors rather than voters.

Or hydrogen. The game is to promote a near-future breakthrough that isn't quite here yet, and it's not those BEVs everyone is driving either, so don't worry! Just buy one more new Camry with ICE in it, the *real* future will be here in time for your next purchase, *after* this one.

I say all day D's and R's work for the same people, but I never bought the 3D-chess / carefully crafted losses conspiracies. Not that deep, they're just chasing the money. But if Harris camp did the math, they're saying it's worth every ~5th pres. election to prevent empowering democratic voters.

Agreed. The Democratic party is surprisingly authoritarian. :-) But why defend the Electoral College, which cost them 2000 & 2016? All I can come up with is that the moneyed interests that control the party are more interested in suppressing democracy than in winning.

I have been thinking about this as well. Xi has been talking about taking Taiwan by force for years. If serious, striking while the U.S. is overcommitted elsewhere and low on weaponry seems obvious. Hopefully it was just rhetoric, but otherwise, why wait? Boots in Iran? The impending recession?

I read "concerned about electability" as "concerned the corporate wing of the party, the corporate media, and the corporate money that owns both will do everything they can to ensure the candidate is not elected". It's the extortion racket that keeps voters choosing the lesser evil.

It will get toned down, but only in the sense that they won't be in the news so much. There will be no accountability, because our descent into fascism is a bipartisan project. Have Dem's ever pushed back on police militarization, police brutality, mass incarceration?

Torture devices. Also, being shocked by the hands that are grabbing you will not make you calm, it will make you instinctively flinch and try to pull away. This will then be charged as "resisting" and used to justify further violence. I'm sure these will frequently be "accidentally" left on.

Conservative culture is all about strict social hierarchy. They don't recognize hypocracy because there is no absolute right or wrong, only positioning in that hierarchy. Attacking someone for a thing you did and they did not is just a way of saying "This person is lower in the hierarchy than me".

"Gave Democrats power in 2016"... Who was president in 2016? Oh yeah, Obama! Had a majority in the House and a supermajority in the Senate at the same time for two years earlier in his presidency. Funny how little Dem's have done in the past, compared to how much they'll always do in the future.

If the people were to rise up against ICE & Trump, Republicans would call for hangings. Democrats would call for "order" and doing things the "right way", meaning donating to and voting for complicit Democrats. Faced with unified civilian leadership, the military would crush the people.

Our elections are terribly unrepresentative in many ways. That said, 2016 and 2020 primaries were pretty bruising for the right wing of the Democratic party, the left wing ran them hard. To me the biggest rig of 2024 was the lack of a real primary. That's not playing together.

If I squint hard enough I can almost picture it as a three-party system: progressives, Democrats, Republicans, left to right. If I keep squinting I see the centrist Democratic party as being more closely aligned with the Republicans.

Shop local, pay cash. More money stays in the local economy, and with the merchant instead of the card company. Also, did you know, credit card companies sell your purchase history to advertisers? They have your name, address, date, amount and often even a detailed list of items in your purchase.
