Working on Anubis is way harder than you'd think. You have to be super careful with every aspect of every change and make sure that things keep working. Adding new features is a terrifying prospect. Here's how we added WebAssembly. Enjoy! anubis.techaro.lol/blog/2026/an...

TL;DR: non-SHA256 proof of work support has finally landed after a year of stilted development, many failed attempts, and learning things no mortal should comprehend about browser internals.

FEATURE: Import an entire folder of configurations at once with wildcard matching. Import /etc/anubis/common-rules/*.yaml. What could go wrong?

FEATURE: The honeypot feature (like iocaine but built into Anubis) can log IP addresses to a file. This file is reset every time it gets over 64Ki, so it doesn't become infinitely large.

FEATURE: Anubis works on Windows Server with native .msi packaging. Try it and let us know how it works!

Seriously though please do give feedback on the MSI packaging for Anubis if you have any to give. This is our first time releasing software for Windows and we want to make it as good as we possibly can. anubis.techaro.lol/docs/admin/e...

Before you ask it: Will this be configurable? Yes. It will. Right now this is the early test version that is being used to prove the idea. Eventually this will be pluggable with your own bullshit generator using WebAssembly and CGI. This early test version generates LinkedIn-core bullshit:

The biggest feature is that we fixed the odd core count bug. You can read more about how hard this was to track down on the blog: anubis.techaro.lol/blog/2025/cp...

Building projects like Anubis is hard, if only because all of the "easy" bugs are now out of the way and all that's left are the "hard" ones. Here's a story of why things have been a bit strange for some people using mobile phones: anubis.techaro.lol/blog/2025/cp... Sometimes CPU cores are odd

Anubis can use your system load as an input for checks. If your server isn't falling over, you shouldn't need to challenge users!

With Red Hat, you just put the RPM files in a folder, run `createrepo` and you're done. It's nice, easy, and makes sense. With Debian, none of the documentation is up to date, you need to write configuration files for some reason, and it's not straightforward.

We have a table of the variables that Anubis expressions can use in the docs: anubis.techaro.lol/docs/admin/c... More will be added soon, but we cut scope so that we can ship fast and iterate based on feedback

This lets you make rules as complicated or as simple as you want:

Techaro @techaro.lol · 05/05/2025
In #Anubis, this means you can make rules like this: Allow requests if all of these conditions are true: * The path starts with /api/ * There is an Authorization header * The Authorization header body starts with Bearer eyJ so you know that the user is using a JSON Web Token

Some of the messages will be customizable with environment variables. More will be added in the future and when the internationalization patch eventually lands this will be replaced with instructions on creating your own "translation".

The check images have semantic meaning, so each is given with an example of a generic version of it, the intended message, and filename for the image.

The big thing this offers is a native knob for overlaying custom CSS and images into the mix. This allows you to replace the happy anime woman with whatever you want.

Techaro BotStopper (the commercial cut of #Anubis) is near ready for its first ~~victim~~, uhh customer, I mean customer. We'll have more docs in the future, but have a preview of what's to come in this thread!

#Anubis now protects UNESCO, FreeBSD, Linux's git/mailing list archives, Arch Linux's wiki, GNOME's GitLab, FFmpeg's bug tracker and more. It's probably good enough for your server too! anubis.techaro.lol
