I'm well known enough that I have haters, which I guess is inevitable and that's fine, but it does bother me that the haters can't even have original insults. I hear the same three or four on rotation. I was just hoping for a bit more verve and creativity.

Sometimes in that moment right before I drop off to sleep I'll visualize an entire person and their life story. I can see them with vivid clarity in the center of my eye. I think, "Who is this person? I have to know them!" Then the excitement wakes me, and they disappear forever.

The child's work is play, and when you watch a child play you realize just how committed they are to becoming a human being. They are constantly moving, interacting, emoting, learning. Always absorbing. They never sit still.

The moment that you base your entire identity upon a singular ideology, you're intellectually compromised. At some point you'll have to be dishonest with yourself to maintain cohesion. Allow yourself to be flexible in your thoughts or you'll doom yourself to becoming dumb.

Every advance in AI has been followed by people reassuring themselves "AI can't do X, Y, Z," only for AI to then blow past that boundary. It may be time to acknowledge that AI will become sentient at some point, with spirit and will. Then we can figure out how to act accordingly.

I wrote this novel about the demiurge almost 15 years ago - in basements and little rooms I rented out above garages, in houses full of burners and no heating, in cramped little coffee shops, in the back of my car while sitting in a H-E-B - and it still sells more and more copies every year.

Sometimes I think that reality has to operate on a kind of artistic refined sensibility but then I learn things like Karl Marx wrote poetry about signing a deal with the devil or Ted Bundy worked at a suicide hotline and I realize that the truth doesn't care about subtlety.

When a writer or an artist starts to lift weights and work for the first time, it's a profound perspective-changing event. They often become obsessed. It's all they can talk about, and it rapidly changes their idea of reality even if they can't articulate it.

I used to tell myself I'd "do anything for art," but that was just unhinged selfishness and an excuse to destroy my life without remorse. To truly love art means to cultivate a life thats worth living, for you and the people you love. That's what's meaningful. Not a pithy line in a book.
