what can we learn from this as public school educators? how can we create culturally sustaining, joyful spaces for our students? how are we infusing our trauma-informed frameworks with rehabilitation through play

What does healing look like for a refugee child? That's the question educational leader Erum Mariam asked when her team built the humanitarian "play labs": small, welcoming spaces where children displaced from their homes can play and reconnect with what they lost. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

we assign different videos to different kids as a form of differentiation, having all the kids watch the same video doesn’t always serve the instructional purpose

teachers supplement instruction with youtube videos because the DOE doesn’t provide us with with video-based content. it makes no sense to ban youtube without giving us an equivalent or better option

it's not enough to simply know what’s happening in the world outside our classrooms, we should be able to speak to if & how systemic racism, structural inequality, political & religious oppression directly impact our students. politics aren’t separate from education, ever

Teaching "about" is not the same as teaching "how to" - adults absolutely get the difference when it comes to sex ed but so many conflate the two approaches when it come to AI.

Mychal sits & shares that Ms. Rachel posted, “Black boys deserve to grow up.” This is not controversial, it is hope. Black library kids deserve to grow up to become Black library grown-ups. Black boys deserve to live in a world where that has not always felt true. Black boys deserve joy ✨

You’re right that it’s been happening for years. NCLB did a lot of damage in the early 2000’s. But the pandemic exposed a lot, including to ourselves.

Yes. And some of the ways it’s the same are not recognized as such. Like parents complaining about “kids these days” and it’s the same behavior they did when they were young

There are some ways teaching doesn’t change no matter how much time passes. Kids are kids. School is school. And yet, teaching in the last 5-10 years has become so dramatically different that it’s hard to believe it’s even the same (one) job.

Kindergarten has become first grade. Children are expected to leave K reading basic texts and writing sentences. If success is strictly defined as such, there is no reason to expect K teachers to offer play, art, social interaction. But 3rd grade teacher like me are dealing with the fallout.
