Many say a ttrpg should be laid out like a recipe. I am saying it is cool sometimes if a ttrpg is laid out like a picture book, or a twine game, or it has flaps and tabs and requires some assembly.

The first two pages from my game V/Sigil. The first page is blank but for grey noise and the slope of a hairy beast's back. The second page, inside the beast's silhouette, reads "There is a beast inside your room that is going to try and kill you again tonight. It will do this regardless of whether or not you go to bed."

things i have learned about making Rabbit's Foot Retrofit: - a videogame is a specific experience. - the first act a player does is give attention. like in a picture's composition, the game's design directs that attention in a certain way. - a player may learn rules, but will not remember facts.

Ran the second public playtest of my in-development game "A Mother's Curse" at the amazing playstorming co-organized by @mixuppixels.bsky.social and www.paradice.wien - We had such a blast! Added this time: Play sheets. It worked just as great with the Spindlewheel Deck by @teacabbage.bsky.social!

The freedom of interpretation in these machine games is deceptive. Without overt restriction, you have to work to keep your interpretation of the cards in line with the machine’s narrative. You maintain the rigidity of the machine, holding it together, unlike a game whose mechanical action stands unambiguously on its own terms; in a machine game, you hold the walls of the labyrinth in place even as you lose your way in its halls.

Additionally, there is a sense of discovery in Spindlewheel games, an almost passive style of storytelling that looks towards the next card draw to resolve, describe, or provoke the next beat of the game. The system itself is a player, providing its own sensibilities and opinions to the contour of the table.

FAILURE IS PROOF OF ACTION
don’t punish your player for trying. reward their character with scars, with depth and coping mechanisms, new fears and nervous tics. Let them wear their red badge of courage. reward them with insights on the way your world works, on guard patterns and burial rites. Let their failures build a stronger foundation for them to try again.
FAILURE IS SUBJECTIVE
you might botch a run on purpose just to learn about where the traps are; you might be happier honing your movement patterns than doing the most damage to the enemy. failure is falling short of a goal; not everyone’s goals are the same. There are plenty of photos of silver-medal olympians weeping next to bright-faced fifth placers.

Is there a play oracle you’d recommend with - cards with text on them - somewhat accessible vocab - flexibility in use (i.e. not cards with rules text on them or too narrow a scope, so no Dialect/TQY) It’d need to be easy to pick up without prior knowledge (no tarot). Any tone or theme is fine.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing Spindlewheel, and Sasha is wonderful. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to look at both sides of each card for inspiration in terms of the communal writing of the story. Looking forward to picking this one up in the near future!
