There has been an explosion in #urbanheat monitoring using low-cost meteorological sensors. In our paper (doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...) in Bulletin of @ametsoc.org, we empirically show why we need to be careful about large biases in such sensors; & provide guidelines for their effective deployment.

The existence of 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 is both a 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 and a 𝗯𝗮𝗱 thing because it shows that the discipline has matured enough that funding intended for doing science can now be systematically siphoned off by Springer Nature to host branded PDFs on their website.

Half the Urban Heat Island effect is currently mitigated by tree cover globally--but benefits are greatest for wealthy cities + suburbs. Current tree cover can only mitigate 10% of urban temp increase due to climate; maximal planting could offset just 10% more. More from @science.nature.org here:

It is often claimed that as cities grow, the urban heat island (UHI) effect intensifies. In our recently published paper in PNAS Nexus (lnkd.in/ghZf5WAr), we show that historical #urban #heat dynamics have been far more nuanced.

🚨In our new paper (doi.org/10.1016/S254... in @thelancetplanet.bsky.social, we develop the Healthy Urban Design Index (HUDI) to gauge the performance of 917 cities in 4 key domains in #Europe using #opensource data. We hope the HUDI can be a starting point for informing #sustainable #urban design.

In our recent paper in @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social Earth System Science Data, we develop #U-Surf, a global 1 km facet-level #urban property dataset. U-Surf is structurally consistent with the urban canyon assumption in process-based #models & addresses a longstanding data gap in these models.

📢 In our recently published paper in Nature #Climate Change, we show that, when we consider the entire #annual cycle, the protective effects of the #urban #heat island during the coldest periods exceed (by over 4 times) the adverse effects during the warmest periods for most non-tropical #cities.
