The neat woodcut vignette on the title page, printed in 1625 uses the eclipse to suggest that someone is being kept in the dark. (Shelfmark: Fag.H.2.39 no.6)

The eclipse came into play as a useful metaphor, as in this anonymous Dutch polemical pamphlet from the Fagel Collection, which complained of corruption among the managers of the Dutch East India company.

Prime Minister Carney was also shown pages from the manuscript, the Book of Armagh with reference to his ancestral home Aghagower in Co. Mayo where St Patrick established a church (TCD MS 52 f.32 & f.13, see ‘Achad Fobuir’ 8 lines from the bottom in f.13).

Jean was the author of two published books and was awarded an honorary MA in 1945 prior to her death in 1949.

Students remembered her fondly for decades, whether keeping meals running during shortages, catering for Free State soldiers on campus in 1922, or surviving a gun battle on Moore Street while shopping for fish (the fish, unfortunately, did not make it back to campus).

The records preserved in the College Archives help bring many of these lives back into focus, including that of Jean Montgomery, a former Quartermaster in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during WWI who was the first woman Superintendent of the College from 1919–1949.

On this day in 1926, the census of Trinity College Dublin was certified, capturing campus life from 100 years ago. There were 185 people living across campus, from students and lecturers to support staff and their families. Among them were 26 “servants”, 17 of them women. @tcddublin.bsky.social

Throughout the 20th century, the Irish Photo Engraving Company worked closely with Cuala Industries and produced the majority of the photoengraved printing blocks which facilitated the creation of their handcrafted work.

Here we see a reproduction of a French artist’s work. The Kagu is regarded as one of the world’s most unique bird species, being a flightless bird found only on the remote island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. It’s believed there are less than 1,000 left roaming around the forests today.

Throughout the existence of the Cuala Press, the Irish Photo Engraving Company Ltd., which was located on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin, manufactured most of the photoengraved printing blocks which were used to create the visual and literary artworks which the Cuala Press is renowned for today.
