A beautiful day of art and creativity and celebrating all the things that make our libraries awesome (and worth funding properly.) The group reading of Diane Di Prima’s Revolutionary Letters was a 2026 highlight for me.

“OUR GRIM MOMENT already teems with horrors aplenty. But the uncertainties and dangers of whatever comes next are underscored precisely by the fact that the administration’s current rhetoric feels so hollow and formulaic, its half-assed renewals of tired public rituals so exhausted and exhausting. Those who can remember the run-up to the second Bush’s war in Iraq should get this point intuitively. It took a lot of concerted effort, at all levels, to sell that enterprise, and an immense expenditure of will and treasure to pursue it even as literal millions turned out in the street to protest. And even then, that war still happened, kept happening, and only got worse after we declared Mission Accomplished.” - Patrick Blanchfield in N+1 - 2/2/26

One thing that happened within many states is that agencies devoted to some kind of wellbeing, education for example, health for example, housing for example, began, in part, to imitate the forces of organized violence, prisons, policing and presented themselves to those who make budgetary decisions as participating in a necessary transition from supporting social welfare to policing its provision. We see this so many times in so many places.

These ghouls are the future of the party according to the NY Times
Text from new york times article on congressmembers gluesenkamp perez and golden: “This little movement may well get driven out of the party before Democrats grasp what it’s truly offering. Ms. Gluesenkamp Perez recently started a podcast called “Blue Dog Radio” with Jared Golden, a congressman from Maine who represents the most conservative district held by any Democrat in the House. Mr. Golden sometimes describes himself as a “progressive conservative,” and he is virtually the only vocal critic of globalization left in the Democratic Party.

Together, they’ve tried to articulate a friendly and Americana-inflected cultural politics “for people who still believe in community, country and the common good,” as the intro to one of the podcast episodes put it, coupled with an economic vision that is arguably more radical than programs offered by many leftists”

Quote from remarks by Kelly Hayes - “Piling on more money to further professionalize the people committing state violence doesn’t change the core dynamics: what they’re there to do, who they target, and what they can get away with doing. At least 35 people died in ICE custody last year. That is not a failure of training. That is the manufacturing of premature death. And what we want is an end to that violence — however it’s dealt out, however it’s dressed up, however it’s defended.”

From Bobby Sands’ prison diary, March 1981
Text from Bobby Sands’ prison diary: They will not criminalise us, rob us of our true identity, steal our individualism, depoliticise us, churn us out as systemised, institutionalised, decent law-abiding robots. Never will they label our liberation struggle as criminal.

I am (even after all the torture) amazed at British logic. Never in eight centuries have they succeeded in breaking the spirit of one man who refused to be broken. They have not dispirited, conquered, nor demoralised my people, nor will they ever.

This series is amazing and the exchange that follows with @lydiajean.bsky.social and @craiggilmore.bsky.social really distills the challenges and opportunities of organizing in times of severe repression and spectacular violence. We have to find new ways to organize around the mundane.
Quote from Lydia Pelot-Hobbs: “Exactly. It’s good when people are moved by these egregious moments! It then becomes a question of how to extend their awareness to the violence that doesn’t take the most spectacular forms. How do we illuminate these dynamics and move people when it’s asking them to be involved in the least sexy moments? Like the land-use meetings, just over and over and over again.”Quote from Craig Gilmore: “But we can’t simply wait for popular outrage at the next egregious moment. Law enforcement’s strategy is, “We can make the spectacular less spectacular by doing it more often and making it mundane, at least in terms of the news cycle.” Police killings haven’t gone down. Police killings have gone up in the United States, deaths in custody have gone up, but that’s harder and harder to organize around because it happens so fucking often. So I think it’s all the more essential that we figure out ways to successfully organize around the mundane. If some of the people who’ve been mobilized by the most spectacular and newsworthy events come along, that’s great.”

Elizabeth Catlett show at the BK Museum is an absolute dream. Well curated, great historical context with everything in Spanish and English, and an amazing mix of prints, sculpture, video and other mediums. Reminder that children are free and adults are pay what you will.
