I loved "Tabernacles of Clay" by @taylorpetrey.bsky.social. "Kinship" is an important exploration and a fantastic followup. Highly recommend.

If you're a PhD student, postdoc, or independent scholar working in Mormon studies, please consider applying to the Eugene England Summer Institute, which I co-lead with @taylorpetrey.bsky.social and Jana Riess. Our first year was an incredible experience & we expect the second year to be as well.

I’ve never had a more pleasant/rewarding academic experience than I did last week co-directing the Eugene England Summer Institute, a writing retreat/workshop for junior scholars in Mormon studies. Thanks to co-directors @taylorpetrey.bsky.social and Jana Riess, & especially the phenomenal fellows.

Incredible how some people applaud past progress like it’s sacred history—labor rights! civil rights! feminism!—but when today’s movements come knocking, it’s all “let’s not get carried away.”

6/ (For Latter-day Saints, the stakes are slightly different. This tradition leans less on biblical hermeneutics and more on continuing revelation through prophetic leadership. But interpretation still matters—because prophets read texts too. And culture shapes what they’re willing to see.)

5/ The real question isn’t what the Bible says. It’s how we choose to read it—and who we’re willing to harm to keep reading it the old way.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 21/04/2025
4/ Today, we’re watching that fight happen again—this time over gender and sexuality. The stakes feel familiar: exclusion cloaked in piety vs. a faith that liberates. Christianity isn’t being corrupted by queer inclusion. It’s being refined—just like it was when it broke with slavery.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 21/04/2025
3/ Literalists lost. Slowly, painfully, they had to admit: the Bible had to be read through a bigger lens—one that could challenge oppression, not sanctify it. That wasn’t “liberal drift.” It was a reckoning with the text’s moral trajectory. A fight for a Bible that could breathe justice.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 21/04/2025
2/ In the 19th century, American Christianity fractured over slavery. The dividing line? Whether to read the Bible by the letter—or by its deeper moral vision.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 21/04/2025
1/ The way Christians used the Bible to defend slavery is eerily similar to how many now use it to condemn queer people. The battle isn’t new. It’s the same script with new actors.

An individual lacks the power to effect structural change alone. But a committee can reach a well-documented consensus that structural change is, regrettably, unfeasible at this time.

Supporting Ukraine is not a Rorschach test. It is an open book True/False for anyone who paid any attention to 20th century European history. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real hard choices about what to do but forced surrender with a knife in the back is so obviously not it.

Why are we here in a world where American oligarchs are buying our politicians and getting to run amock in the government? One of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history: Citizen’s United.

While the notion that the gender of deities directly mirrors the gender politics of a religion was an overly simplistic interpretation of earlier social analyses, the exposition of heteropatriarchal ideology concealed as theology continues to be a crucial aspect of analysis.

8/ The challenge isn’t just defending government but making people realize it’s been working in their lives all along. Because the alternative Trump offers isn’t “freedom”—it’s dysfunction, instability, and, ultimately, a power vacuum waiting to be filled by authoritarians. END

7/ If Democrats want to fight back against “burn it all down” politics, they need to do two things: •Improve government where it’s failing. •Make government visible where it’s working—so people see the institutions, norms, and alliances that hold everything together.

6/ Safe food, clean water, clear air, roads, international travel, banking, stable markets, education, workplace safety, home buying, national parks, even sports—none of these are “natural” or just the product of free markets. They exist because of a functioning state.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
5/ Obama once joked about a protest sign reading: “Keep the government’s hands off my Social Security.” That’s the problem: much of what government does is invisible or inscrutable to regular people, so people assume modern life just works on its own.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
4/ The era of chaotic cuts hasn’t exposed any dysfunction or inefficiency—it’s revealed just how well government actually works. Some people might not care about particular programs, but overall people don’t notice its presence until it’s taken away.
140
Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
3/ Yes, government can be slow, bureaucratic, and entrenched in protecting wealth and power. But I think the bigger issue isn’t that government is inefficient—it’s that it’s so effective at basic governance that people take it for granted.

Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
2/ Right-wing media has spent decades stoking distrust in institutions, convincing people that any non-conservative source is lying. Anti-government sentiment has long simmered on the right (and fringes of the left), but Trump has weaponized it to justify authoritarianism.
160
Taylor Petrey @taylorpetrey.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
1/ Been thinking about the anti-institutional mood that helped bring Trump to power—the idea that everything is broken and should be burned down. The usual take is that Democrats got stuck defending the status quo. That’s partly true—but also misses something important.

NT Profs: my go-to teaching example of how the canonical gospels are shaping Jesus's story to fit their later interpretations of prophesy is the triumphal entry with the donkey/colt in the synoptics. What do you use to make this point?
