Anecdotally, I feel confident that Preschool for All is keeping people here (perhaps mainly those on the higher end of this age range). It would be worthwhile to SOMETIMES hear about the benefits of these taxes, too.

The lack of job opportunities in Portland is definitely impacting my friends in their 20s, though I’m not sure if it’s genuinely worse here than elsewhere. But I am dubious that most Gen Zers are making enough money to be directly impacted by Oregon’s supposed punishing tax system.

Yes haha I forgot to say that. Doesn’t work so well if unattended. I see people just chilling in their cars in the bike lane a lot!

I do that sometimes too and will offer no condemnation of it. It’s so enraging!!! My calmer strategy is probably not effective in the long-term…only concrete barriers could actually keep drivers out of the bike lane for real.

(It actually makes me really nervous to do this because asking for a tiny bit of respect from drivers can feel like an intense confrontation. But when it works, it feels great.)

I’ve recently been trying an “I’ll wait” strategy re: cars parked in the bike lane (if they’re not gonna move, I’ll calmly park my bike behind them until they do). This tactic has caused some drivers to feel guilty and move and others to view me as the Antichrist. Either way is ok 👍

Spoiler alert: I did cheat (according to my own strict rules) and took Biketown bikes and scooters multiple times. This cost probably $40 extra lol. Some of those bike rentals could’ve been avoided if I planned ahead, which I never do.

Dan Ryan is under a court order not to delete messages from his personal phone, which may contain public records. In court documents, Ryan said he no longer has the phone he's been using, because his spouse traded it in the same day a judge barred him from deleting records. He says nothing was lost.

I wanna say something, a few days into this—even after the recent service cuts, TriMet is still a very reasonable way to get around Portland. I wouldn’t want my “experiment” to imply I think taking the bus is some brave feat. It’s actually quite convenient.

The philosophy behind endorsements has always been a mix of “this is who we like” and “this is who we think can win.” I wonder if it would be possible to evaluate which type of endorsements (more values-based vs very strategical) are more effective/reflective of voter attitudes.

Taylor Griggs @taylorgriggs.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Huh. This year it seems like there’s a lot of ranked choice math going into endorsement decisions and I’m not sure how much of it actually fits with how the system works in practice. I think predictions about voter behavior are often just guesses and multimember RCV makes that more true.

If you actually want to catch a bus, I don’t recommend walking to the next stop, because even if Google Maps says the bus is late, it may very well come early and pass you while you’re in between stops and then you’re screwed for the next 15-45 minutes.

Taylor Griggs @taylorgriggs.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Update: I’ve walked about 13,000 steps today (per my possibly unreliable iPhone pedometer), which is about 2.5x my recent average (sad to say). This is bc 1) I had to run an errand in a bit of a transit dead zone and 2) one of my buses was so late I decided to start walking and I never saw the bus

To be clear, I don’t think there’s an inherent moral/environmental advantage to taking the bus instead of riding your bike. But many people in Portland solely rely on transit to get around, and I’m unaccustomed to those constraints. So I’m gonna try it out.

It’s the Week Without Driving. I only became aware of this annual initiative after I got rid of my car so it’s never been much of a challenge for me. But I want to participate this year, so I’m tweaking the challenge. This week, I’ll put away my bike and only take public transit to get around.

A measure seeking to create a clean energy fund in Eugene (similar to the one in Portland) is facing some heavy pushback from the local and state chambers of commerce. New campaign finance data shows Oregon Business and Industry has donated $25,000 (some in-kind) to stop the measure.

It’s not technically a “surplus”—the program made more than it was initially projected to, but it is currently completely allocated through 2029. Roughly half of it goes back into city bureaus in some form or another.

The ECEF opponents portray PCEF as a failure, saying it has “raised prices, hurt Portland’s economy, and set off fights between politicians over pet projects.” The first two points are not evidence-based. The third isn’t enough to stop environmental advocates from pushing ECEF forward.

Taylor Griggs @taylorgriggs.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Eugene’s clean energy fund proposal has received lots of support, but also some pointed pushback. Much of the opposition has been derisive about PCEF, the proposed Eugene program’s counterpart in Portland. Opponents say voters should reject ECEF because “Portland has already tried it.”

The Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund (PCEF) was adopted by voters in 2018, and it has raised about $200 million a year since tax collection began in 2019. In November, voters in Eugene will consider adopting a clean energy fund of their own, heavily inspired by PCEF.
