Picked this up on a whim in a charity shop last week and now I need the rest because is it so good! An astute meditation on the space we do and don’t take up in the world.

I originally planted this in the wrong part of the garden and had to transfer it to a pot and place it in a sunnier part of the garden because I forget how short Scottish summers are but the dahlia finally bloomed, and honestly this colour is so lush! 🧡 🌱
A close up of an orange dahlia flower head in full bloom, looks a little like a sunflower but has dark orange petals near the centre which fades to a lighter colour towards the tip.A tall dahlia plant in a pot with one orange flower in bloom, it is surrounded by other plants in pots catching the last of the autumnal rays before the sun disappears around the other side of the house, a patch of blue sky with wispy clouds peeks through a gap between some trees in the background.

Yesterday went to Dovecot to see the Costume Couture: 60 years of Cosprop exhibit which was exquisite but also popped up to the balcony to view the Elizabeth Blackadder and the angy orange cat at the bottom is sending me! Also this is a tapestry and not a painting! Gobsmackingly gorgeous!
A handwoven tapestry that depicts three curious cats in an interior full of leafy potted plants. The cats are two calicos and a black cats amongst and assortment of orchids and green leafed potted house plants.Text of the description for the previous slide.
Elizabeth Blackadder and Dovecot Studios
Cats at Play. 1995. Tapestry, handwoven, wool, cotton, and linen. 205cm by 205cm, private collection.
Cats at play combines two subjects that Blackadder was well-known for: botanicals and cats. The tapestry depicts three curious cats in an interior full of leafy potted plants. The large tapestry emphasises the painterly marks and characteristics of her watercolour paintings.

With an overallpalette of greens, Blackadder postioned the cats and flowers to provide pops of deep colour to break up the subtle shades. Purple orchid stems, bursts of pinks and petals, and calico cats demonstrate her innate understanding of colour and compositions, while the subject matter holds a charm that many found so endearing in Blackadder's work.

Recently read Perfection by Vincenzo Latrinico translated by Sophie Hughes described as 'a sociological novel about the emptiness of contemporary existence, beautifully written, brilliantly scathing' and is a really great critique of on vs offline existence.

It’s been the the most stressful of summers for a myriad of reasons, so to end the month went to see Gwen John at the Modern 2 for some inspiration before I start my drawing, painting and mixed media class next month.

I finished Lucia Berlin's A Manual for Cleaning Women and whilst sometimes a bit of a slog due to heavy topics but Teenage Punk is the perfect short story due to its cadence and short, punchy descriptions and Electric Car, El Paso is just hilarious. Some of her one line descriptions are pure poetry.

Each hoop is set with fabric and a variation of a landscape consisting of mountains above a sea or field and with a sun or moon which is down to the viewer’s interpretation. Also, speaking of cultural and personal memory, went into town yesterday to drop off my laptop for repair because like my memory, nothing lasts for more than five minutes any more, but took time to go and see the Sandra George photo exhibit at the City Art Centre and really enjoyed it.

Back at art class and more experiments in collagraphy and intaglio printing using fabrics like scrim and linen to create textural backgrounds for a future project. I like intaglio because it also embosses the paper slightly giving it more texture. 🧶🎨 #printmaking #textileart #art

Okay, I'm making plans to release some new work soon and this is from a batch of work I've tentatively titled Meditations. This is from the Landscape series, the completed hoop is inspired by cherry blossom season 🌸 and the other by the lilac tree in our garden. #embroidery #traditionalcrafts 🪡🧶🎨
Two embroidery hoops one with a finished design, the other in the process of being stitched. The first hoop on the left is set with light fabric and onto it is stitched a landscape consisting of the bottom half stitched in a various shades of pink thread to represent pink fields, above it is a green hill, behind the hill sits a gold sun. The second hoop is also set with light fabric and a similar design that has started to be filled in with pink and purple threads.

As Bob Ross said 'There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.' More experiments in printmaking. What was an exercise in cutting straight lines, turned into an exercise on negative space but this design is growing on me. Not so happy accident - stabbing myself with the lino cutter! #textileart

Got all my pigeons in a row because I'm on a budget!
On top of a flat roof of a dormer sit a row of pigeons taking in the morning sun as they wait for one of us to fill up the bird feeder, the sky is blue with a translucent layer of cloud, the ripples of the curtain are highlighted and shadowed by the light and the roof tiles are glistening from the frost melting.

Good morning
A garden scene, the bottom, left and right borders are framed by a hedge and two pines trees, they sit is shadow as the light is behind them. Behind the top of the hedge, the rising sun peeks through a soft gold colour, the sky around it a soft light yellow fading upwards and blending in with the light blue morning sky. There are wispy cotton clouds high above, a pigeon is caught in mid flight with its wings raised high and fantail spread as it flies upwards, the light just barely showing through the feathers.

Rewatched Melancholia today and it's an oddly comforting end of the world movie but also I forgot how beautiful the cinematography is, the first 8 minute opening sequence could be a stand alone movie in its self.
Six still from the film Melancholia (2011) which include a close up shot of a blond woman's face with leaves falling to the ground behind her, a bride, her sister and nephew standing on a grand lawn in the semi darkness with a setting sun and a blue planet in the sky, a woman carrying her son across a gold course, a blond white woman wearing a black t shirt looking at her hands in winder as white electric strands come out of them, a blue planet engulfing the earth and a bride trying to walk across some grass with roots trying to entwine themselves around her and stop her.
