Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 30/08/2026I've seen such little fuss ab ut the Vagrancy act and I'm actually flabbergasted. 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Especially if you're not of the Tribes and thus don't understand the cultural connections. What words are you even looking for? You have to do a lot of multiple word linkage and have a deep understanding of the culture to find scraps of us in Early record. 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Trying to research Canting Tribe folks via written word is a dubious task at best. 99% of Canting Tribes have an Oral culture, expecting to trace them historically via their own written word is a foolhardy task. Trying to do it via an outside cultures written word perhaps more so. 110
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 01/04/2026Well I'm planning on having another today 🤣🤣 so mission accomplished. I made a new digital database system for organising sources from books. I'm pretty excited about that 🤣 110

Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 03/12/2025I stand by our old traditions. ❤️ Fun fact Goodeners who travelled the path to collect the Goodening gifts for the community from the big houses were called Dawdlers. And they were "Dawdling"! This is where the word comes from in the English language! 💕 🥰 021

Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 30/07/2025Sometimes it feels like everything is slipping through my fingers and I'm in this weird nowhere land. Like sure I can joke about fish and chips as much as the next brit. But they can't speak my language, or sing in the ways my folks did. They don't leave pennies on the sill. Just a big divide. 000
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 30/07/2025It's messing with my head today. I know all I can do is try and gather, match up what I Know, and what I've heard, learnt and bring it together. And it's extra hard because that whole generation is just... Gone now. The ones I inherited this from. 110

Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 20/07/2025So, while we may tone roughly the same, there are other physical characteristics that give us away. Just thought it was important to note, since this is still how the police tend to still pick us out of a crowd. But obvious things like accent, caravan, dress and language etc are more obvious. 000
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 20/07/2025(The main reasons, apart from surgery, that these features aren't as obvious for people now who aren't on the "Lookout" for them is that the eradication of such features was the purpose behind many Empire schemes, such as the Eugenics and forced breeding programs, forced migration and adoption etc) 100
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 20/07/2025Many of us, now we have a choice since the schemes stopped in the 1990s, don't have the surgeries anymore to remove our features. (The only thing we tend to correct is our teeth and that's for health reasons) But yeah, these differences are what the racists and police pick up on A "Lookout" list. 100
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 20/07/2025But many Canting Tribe Kids didn't qualify for whitewashing (Yes, kids-adults were too far gone, apparently) because their "overwhelming" features were too similar to "That of the Maori or Red Indian". These differences also were the focus of Nazi "Racial Experts", which Empire welcomed. 100
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 20/07/2025TW: Mutilation, Abuse, Racism. Quick note- there are phsycial differences for Canting Tribe folks - and it's something used in the profiling. It's also what the Empire wanted to eradicate with their white washing schemes, which included skin dying, Bleaching, surgery and many more horrors. 100

Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025I feel that! My nan is from Ireland. I can find literally *nothing* about her family at all. If it wasn't for the fact that her family has been to family funerals over there, you could easily presume it was some sort of fake family lore. 🤪 110
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025There was a nice palgrave book that looked at the effects of the Gammon Cant on the people and culture in Ireland!.... But it's 80 quid. link.springer.com/book/10.1007...link.springer.comIrish Traveller LanguageThis book combines an ethnographic approach with folk linguistics to provide an account of Irish Traveller Language. 000
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Hahaha. Books 😭 Yeah. They don't really exist as such. At least. Not any ones that aren't wildly racist. I tend to post snippets I find though. Along with sources! But a nice collated book isn't... Much of a thing. 200
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Don't worry, I do this too and I SPEAK THE LANGUAGES 😂😭😭😭😭🤣 I have whole forehead slapping moments, Picard style as I realise something that should have been dancing obvious in front of me.media.tenor.coma bald man is wearing a red sweater with a star trek logo on itALT: a bald man is wearing a red sweater with a star trek logo on it 100
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Some also pass words from each other too. Like Hoppers Cant is happily intermeshed with at least 4 Canting Languages, and contributed to the development of the Cockney Language (officially recognised as a community language with 3 dialects in 2023) alongside EC. It's all pretty neat 😍😎 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025But yeah there's loads. A lot of them have different languages bases too, in terms of grammar, sentence structuring etc. Some are Pre Celtic, some are Irish based, some are English, Brythonic... Beurla Reagaird has a predominantly Gàidhlig base. Some more Romany, others are a multi strand jumble! 110
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Omg don't get me started because I will go on *forever* but there's sooooooo many words that have made it over! Like the whole 'cut of ya jib' thing That's the Cant 🥹 specifically from EC, which formed after Romany folks were inducted into the Tribes. (Chib is Romany for tongue) 220
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025I mean it's all a bit depressing at the moment, but it's usually a pretty cool feed 💀😭😂 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025But honestly it's no issue! 💕 It's a common misconception and something difficult to convey and honestly I'm happy you even knew of it at all haha. 😂 (Your post was sucked into my other list that collates all mentions of Canting Languages and culture, which is how I saw it! hehe) 120
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025If you want to learn from some Canting Folk from maaaaany different Tribes Nomadic and non Nomadic, I've been collating a list! I think we also all have different Canting Languages we speak too, which is pretty cool! (And doing some serious conservation work on a few to keep them going) 220
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Gammon is a fully functional language in the Canting Language tree. It's not just slang 😃 (Canting Tribe Lass here) Although yeah, I do have to do a double take when somebody types Gammon. I'm like.. Ooh? Gammon Cant? Dya Mang ta Cant? 👀 Minceirs Tairi? But no. It's the other Gammon. 😭🤣 120
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025I'm going to put work into my business and use it to raise up other people affected by Colonialism. It's not going to be fixed today. But I'm going to do what my ancestors did-make sure that if my folks are going to have a next generation that it's going to be a better one for them. #CantingTribe 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025Bah. Racism ain't gonna be fixed today. Canting Tribe Folks are gonna have to keep on doing what we've been doing for hundreds of years and just keep on plodding on. I'm gonna clean my house. I'm gonna uplift others. I'm going to educate folks on Indigenous matters and I'm gonna create art. 120
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025They need to hurry it up with the blood test at home version that they're going to be trialling. Especially since that's all they're doing for the routine appointments these days. At least then it cuts back on the to-and-fro ing. 010
Tarn @tarn-n.bsky.social · 19/07/2025This scheme finally-officially - came to an end in the 1990s. Where it was replaced by the forced adoption schemes that #CantingTribe children still suffer to this day, which still holds the cultural seperation actions. The sentences marked out on the photographs are to remove chances of ban. 010
