Very excited to share that the first episode of my new YouTube series, Trauma in your DNA?, is now live! There’s a lot of hot takes about generational trauma online. The real science is much more complicated, and much more interesting. Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1iR...

When unequal systems are mistaken for character flaws
Our preference for simplicity combines with other biases and determines whose behaviour is afforded context.

Humans are not simple. That’s the premise of Systems Shape Systems, my newsletter exploring how biology, history and society shape behaviour. I’ve started a YouTube series, beginning with my essay on transgenerational trauma, with added commentary: Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pvb...

Given the recent findings regarding psychosocial safety in australian university contexts, it is clear that change is necessary. @taralync.bsky.social & @eivimeycook.bsky.social diplomatically discuss academic norms around rejection and resilience blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsoci...

Rejection in academia is structural not personal - LSE Impact
Unlike other high-profile professions, academia treats rejection as personal judgement, can it create ways of talking about rejection that are more realistic?

Wrote this piece because it seemed to me that plasticity is what's missing from the public discourse on transgenerational effects, read more here: Trauma is carried in your DNA. But science reveals a more complicated story theconversation.com/trauma-is-ca...

Trauma is carried in your DNA. But science reveals a more complicated story
While trauma can ripple across generations, its effects aren’t hard-coded in our genes.

For the few I have on here, I've written a very personal piece on chronic illness that explores bias and the real reasons it is so difficult to get workplace accommodations and flexibility, read it here: taralync.medium.com/trust-me-im-...

Bleak, grim, terrible news is coming in fast these days. I'm sorry for all my academic folks in the US and others who rely on government funding and programs, as well as the many PhDs I know working for federal agencies. Destruction and chaos is the point, I know, and it extremely sucks.

Where can I scream into a void? (Is it here?) I’ve got to say, with everything going on, trying to find a job while managing my chronic illness, and trying to gauge what work I can do when I can no longer struggle through a 9-5 job, is exhausting! Add in constant medical appointments, etc. #burntout

Reproductive output of old males is limited by seminal fluid, not sperm number
What causes an old male to reproductively fail? Is it his sperm or seminal fluid? In fruit flies, old males produce fewer offspring than young males. But s

I know, I know, I'm always the one complaining about academia. But I do have to say that if we don't change the incentive structures in academia and really change the publish or perish culture--things like this will continue to happen (not at all to justify these actions but to understand them).
