One year ago today, Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were senselessly murdered in an act of political violence. In their memory, we recommit ourselves to the values that Melissa and Mark exemplified: building a kinder, more just, and loving world.

Bruno Mars did not disappoint. My wife and daughter sang along with joyous abandon to most songs but compared to everyone around us seeming to have a religious experience i felt out if place lol.

Single family rooftop will create winners (those who can deploy) and losers (those who cannot.) The Ann Arbir program may address income inequality issues, but only for a relative handful of residents. Gotta think bigger & broader. Gotta figure out how to scale & keep DC residents money in DC.

Hmmm. I love and have solar here in DC, but this model seems a bad fit for the District, where nearly 60% of residents are renters. We should be adding distributed batteries to new and existing community solar, dispatched to manage down what we pay to PJM, while boosting EE and DR programs.

Again: for any big liberal donor who wants to funnel millions into fixing this country's politics, the ROI on buying any struggling paper and simply tasking it with doing real reporting on local news is vastly higher than the same $$ given to some group that does mass ad buys every election year.

The famous Andor line is that "tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle." Here is a perfect example of that through malicious compliance: Idaho forced the city of Boise to remove its Pride flags. So the city painted rainbows everywhere else.

The “win-win” I mentioned was really less a “win-win” but more a damage mitigation effort. And it still didn’t work. But we felt we had to try. Now shifting our energies to better use.

Judgement calls at various points. Sometimes path “A” wins, sometimes it doesn’t. It is fair to say that clean energy advocacy & climate advocacy remain aligned but are not the same; some clean energy folks are climate hawks but many are not; there will be disconnects. Permitting reform was one.

Some of us were trying to offer a win-win for the new admin before it set the plan, in hopes of preserving some of the things we accomplished while serving in Biden. Clearly it didn’t work, but after Nov 2024 it wasn’t clear what else we might be able to do in the moment.

To be fair, “wishcasting” is also a coping mechanism. But seriously some of us tried the whole “put it out there and manifest a good outcome” play before that line of reasoning fell apart on January 20th. :(

Below is my letter to the NPS National Capital Area Regional Director:
Letterhead from Councilmember Janeese Lewis George

Jennifer Takouhi Nersesian
Regional Director
National Capital Area
National Park Service
1100 Ohio Drive, SW
Washington, DC 20242

March 20, 2026
Dear Director Nersesian,

I am deeply concerned by reports that the National Park Service plans to start removing the protected bike lane that runs along 15th Street NW between Constitution Avenue south to the Tidal Basin - and especially dismayed at the decision to do so during the height of the cherry blossom season and tourism to our beautiful city.

The removal of the protected bike lane will disrupt traffic and add to congestion in this high-traffic area. An evaluation by the District Department of Transportatior ("DDOT") found that the 2021 installation of the lane has made the corridor more efficient for motorists, resulting in decreased vehicle traveling times during peak hours in both the northbound and southbound directions.

The 15" Street protected bike lane also led to increased safety for both vehicles and cyclists, leading to a 69% reduction in bicycle crashes, a 46% reduction in roadway crashes, and a 25% reduction in podestrian crashes.

Protected bike lane is a common-sense strategy to ensure safety and efficiency along this highly trafficked corridor. But it's not just District residents who will be negatively impacted if this bike lane is removed - it is heavily utilized by tourists from all 50 states. Small businesses that provide rentals and tours have reported that thousands of visitors utilize the lane cach week and would be less safe as they navigate the road alongside 2 or 3-ton vehicles.

The data speaks for itself. Removing protected bike lanes doesn't alleviate congestion - it will cause more of it as accidents increase. I urge you to reconsider the decision to remove the bike lane along this vital corridor.

In service,
Janeese Lewis George
Councilmember, Ward 4
