Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The ALT #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #Green, any bird with green showing set by @robcrank68.bsky.social ~ Loved this amazing moment watching this Green Woodpecker fledge from the nest 😍🥰🪶🦉 #birdingWales #ukbirding #birdphotography #EastCoastKin #bluesky #naturephotography #naturetherapy
Photo taken at Forest Farm NR ~ Cardiff ~ South Wales

A young Green Woodpecker (fledgling) leaves its tree-cavity nest around June, appearing as a streaky, pale-bellied bird with a slight, dull red crown and black moustache. It often lands on the ground, learning to hunt ants with a long, sticky tongue, appearing clumsy yet, sometimes, vocal. They are shy but may visit lawns, often accompanied by a parent for food training, sometimes clinging awkwardly to trees.

Appearance: Unlike the solid olive-green adult, the youngster is heavily speckled and streaky, appearing lighter in colour, making it look "greyish green" or mottled rather than bright green.

Behaviour (Grounding): They frequently land directly onto grass or near the base of trees, where they might seem stuck or awkward, rather than high in the branches immediately.

Movement & Sound: They make a "laughing" call (yaffle) and are often heard calling out loudly for food in gardens before they are seen.

Distinctive Shape: Even as a juvenile, they possess the unmistakable large head, long beak, and short tail characteristic of a woodpecker, often feeding while hunched over on the ground.

Flight: Their first flights are often short, fluttering hops, often moving from a low branch to the ground.

I found FH research very hard to tear myself away from. It's like doing a jigsaw. You say 'just one more search....I'll just look at...' I tried doing some more research last year but had to give up as it was too much for my brain to handle! All that scrolling down to find names etc.

They must have asked him what his 2nd name was & he said William. And that became his surname & all his childrens' for a while. It took 20 yrs for the family to reappear as Phillips.

I spent a long time looking for my great grandma Annie Phillips, dad was Charles William Phillips. I worked out eventually he was on 2 census returns as Charles, surname William.

I have a habit too of researching non-family members. I spent ages tracking the family of someone who had a brass plate on a desk my Gran owned. She was nothing to do with our family. The desk would have picked up 2nd hand. I'm just nosey about other people's lives.

I took over the FH research from my dad in 2006. He'd done all the hard leg work, going to record offices, looking at fiches etc & I came along, got onto Ancestry & solved some dead ends just like that. I always felt bad that I had it so easy.
