This vintage albumen print captures a scene from about 1880 Japan, traditionally titled "Japan, Mother looking after her child"
Kneeling upon a woven tatami floor within a serene interior, a mother gazes down with tender absorption at her infant resting upon a ribbed, striped silk cushion (makura). She wears a dark, softly draped silk kimono, her hair meticulously dressed in an oiled, sculpted marumage—the classical chignon worn by married women during the Edo and Meiji eras. In her right hand, she poisedly holds a pale paper hand fan (uchiwa) above her sleeping child to stir a gentle, cooling breeze. The infant, clad in a patterned summer robe, rests comfortably while traditional playthings lie scattered across the foreground, including a small pellet drum (denden daiko) decorated with triple-swirl tomoe motifs. In the background, a low cabinet featuring sliding panels painted with a pine branch supports an ornamental bronze statuette of an elephant carrying figures, completing the staged domestic sanctuary.

Dating to approximately 1880, this vintage albumen print belongs to the celebrated genre of Yokohama shashin ("Yokohama photography"), which flourished during the middle Meiji period (1868–1912). Pioneered by foreign and Japanese photographers such as Felice Beato, Baron Raimund von Stillfried, and Kusakabe Kimbei, these studio portraits were produced primarily for foreign travelers seeking nostalgic souvenirs of "old Japan." Studios meticulously constructed elaborate sets using authentic architectural elements, painted screens, and cultural props, frequently employing local women and children as models. Despite its constructed studio origin, the image accurately records late 19th-century domestic customs surrounding maternal care (bosei). The inclusion of the denden daiko carries specific cultural significance: traditionally presented to newborn infants during temple visits (omiynamairi), the drum served both as a rhythmic toy and a protective talisman believed to ward off evil spirits and foster an upright character.

Tempio Eikando Zenrin-ji - Kyoto, Japan
Anchoring the foreground in heavy, moss-encrusted stone, a low cylindrical water basin (chōzubachi) holds a perfectly still, mirror-like disk of water reflecting the verdant canopy overhead. Etched across this liquid mirror, the dark, inverted silhouette of an overhanging branch cuts across the bright reflection of emerald leaves. Beyond the basin, a gnarled, sinuous tree trunk arches upward, framing a serene garden where soft mounds of moss merge into a bed of fine white gravel (shirakawa-suna). In the background, a traditional tile-roofed plaster wall (tsujibe) stretches horizontally, its weathered surface sheltered beneath a airy canopy of fresh green maple foliage. Tucked against the eastern slopes of Kyoto’s Higashiyama mountain range, Eikandō—officially designated as Zenrin-ji—was established in 853 CE by Shinshō, a leading disciple of Kūkai, originally as a Shingon sanctuary before evolving into the head seat of the Seizan branch of Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Buddhism). Celebrated across Japanese literary history as Momiji-no-Eikandō ("Eikandō of the Autumn Leaves"), the temple complex interweaves historic worship halls, winding covered walkways, and contemplative gardens designed to mirror the tranquil beauty of the Western Paradise. Water basins like this stone vessel perform a vital ritual role within the precinct, providing a site for temizu (hand-and-mouth purification) before entering sacred spaces or tea pavilions. The stonemasonry exemplifies the enduring legacy of Japanese architectural stone craft (monozukuri), where unrefined granite is subtly shaped to harmonize with the natural contours of the earth.

Le Chat Noir by Polina Washington
the character "Le Chat Noir" (The Black Cat) by the popular artist and photographer Polina Washington.

In this widely shared series, the model poses in various urban and indoor settings wearing an elegant black skirt and top, contrasted by a whimsical, raw-cardboard cat mask meticulously handmade from a shipping box. The mask retains the organic aesthetic of the cardboard, complete with cut-out eyes, structural geometric folded ears, and marker lines.

Polina Washington is heavily recognized for her cinematic use of light, atmospheric colors, and dreamlike or surreal concepts in her photography series.

Fishing Boat 🌊
This photo by Peggy Choucair shows a fishing boat with a white hull and dark trim resting on sandy beach near the Baltic Sea shoreline. The boat is positioned at an angle, with its bow facing slightly toward the water. The sky shows soft blue and pink tones, suggesting late evening light (sunset). Gentle waves are visible in the background, and a small pool of water separates the boat from the open sea.
