Today's SFF story: Beartrap by Lesley Warren. One of those stories that immediately got me to search the author's name to see if she'd written a book to buy. Compelling 1st person POV, haunted prehistoric-tinged world, narrative that is absolutely sure of what it's doing. moondaymag.com/beartrap

Today's SFF story: How To Remain Safe In A Conversation If You're Somebody's Wife by @debbieurbanski.bsky.social. One of my favorite horror types is "what if it's actually *not* just your anxiety." Lots of terrifying dialogue here. Fun!! Good luck, Katie. www.unchartedmag.com/stories/how-...

Today's SFF story: The Somnambulist by @mckatie.bsky.social. “I knew you’d be here,” he says. Something troubled and uncertain distorts his schoolboy vowels. “I had a dream about it.” I love bogs and mysteries and main characters who are in way over their heads. www.3lobedmag.com/issue46/3lbe...

Today's SFF story: Just listed: Hardwood Floors and a Generous Curse by @valeriesirenko.bsky.social. This one made me cry. Granted, anything related to the terrible absurdities of rent & mortgages can make me cry, but this time I think it was because of the story. www.orions-belt.net/archives/jus...

Today's SFF story: The Claywife by @tanadrin.bsky.social. This story fascinated me, and I immediately loved it. The punctuation shows as much about the main character as the prose: a mechanical rhythm can hide a great depth of feeling. othersidespec.com/pieces/the-c... @othersidespec.bsky.social

Today's SFF story: Brincando Charcos by @benfrancisco.bsky.social in Strange Horizons. I was rooting for Javier and Mateo so hard. A tender, honest story about what magic is and isn't, and people learning how to get out of their own way. strangehorizons.com/fiction/brin...

Today's SFF story: Everyone Hates It When The Alien Shows Up At The Club by @elijah.mea.rs. 1. Every so often I find myself thinking "(Yuck (yuck (yuck (yuck (yuck)))))" and chuckling. 2. I would say I'd watch this show, but it's also so fun to read?? flashfictiononline.com/issues/febru...

Today's SFF story: The Prison-House of Language by @mor1233.bsky.social. I love a great first-person POV and this was no exception. "Language, to me, is a dangerous and unwanted thing, a brutal intrusion into my inner space. I became a linguist." www.penumbric.com/archives/Dec...

Today's sff story: The Garden by Emma Törzs. One of the MANY from Uncanny that made me think, "huh, I've never read anything like this." The setting and narrator are both wonderful mysteries, and I loved how they solve each other. www.uncannymagazine.com/article/the-...

I love a) reading speculative short stories and b) making lists. Every day, starting today and going for as long as I feel like it, I'm going to post about one story that I've recently read and loved.

Unless I'm asleep, I'm probably ready to drop everything and talk about Simon Jimenez's books. I read The Vanished Birds and The Spear Cuts Through Water in one (long) day each, and each was one of the best, most immersive reading experiences of the year.

The Spear Cuts Through Water got quite a bit of recognition, but I want to be able to talk about it with random people on the street.

I read this when it came out and loved it. The end made me stare blankly into space and go "oh," in the best way possible.

My lesson from September so far: stop choosing audiobooks that make you think "jeez, are there really still 5 hours left?" instead, choose audiobooks that make you think "OH GOODY I GET TO LISTEN TO JADE CITY BY FONDA LEE"

I loved a lot of stories in Amplitudes (ed. Lee Mandelo), but Nat X. Ray's was my favorite. Can't find any more of their work, so hopefully it's the first of many.
