Spending some of my holiday getting caught up on comics since I've been neglecting the hobby for the past year or two and man, everything going on in the Ultimate and Absolute lines is pretty incredible, huh? It's amazing what these creators can do when they're unshackled by continuity.

It’s that time of year again where I make little graphics highlighting my favorite stuff that came out this year. I didn’t read many comics until around November (superhero burnout has been hitting me hard lately), so I’ve been playing catch-up. 😅

Favorite Movies of 2025: Friendship, One Battle After Another, 28 Years Later, Sinners, Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc

Favorite TV & Anime of 2025: The Chair Company, Alien: Earth, The Rehearsal, The Apothecary Diaries, Pluribus

Post a move you like with a terrible rotten tomatoes score. Truly unhinged that both critic and audience ratings for Snake Eyes are this low.

A screenshot of the Rotten Tomatoes page for the De Palma movie Snake Eyes. It has a critic score of 42% and an audience score of 35%

Got some new desk friends on my recent work trip to Tokyo. Hee ho!

A figure of Jack Frost from Shin Megami Tensei standing on a little box that looks like a kotatsu that has Toro (the PlayStation Japan mascot) sticking his head out of it.

Miniature figures of Char’s Zaku from Gundam and Makima from Chainsaw Man sitting on a Studio Ghibli finger skateboard.

Back in Tokyo for work so of course I had to go see the new Shibuya Parco Sega store! Got some Sonic and Yakuza merch there, including a miniature metallic Dreamcast and a super silly Yakuza acrylic standee that comes with a Red Bull for some reason.

My purchases from the Sega store, including a plush an acrylic standee of Majima from Yakuza, an exclusive Sonic plush, three pins of Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow, a couple of Japanese-themed Sonic coasters, and the aforementioned metal Dreamcast scale model.

Had a great time at my first GenCon with @jamjamlee.bsky.social this week! I think our highlights of the show were the game of Bluebeard’s Bride that we played, as well as our preview game of the upcoming Cyberpunk Legends card game! The Faster Purple Worm show was a blast as well. 😊

Follow-up to this. Superman was pretty dang good!! boxd.it/akwmxv

A 4.5 star review of the 2025 Superman movie. The review reads: Doesn’t 100% nail it, but at its core it understands its lead character, which is more than a lot of recent superhero movies can claim. Excellent representations of Lois, Jimmy, Mr. Terrific, and so many others in here as well! The writing still leans a little too heavily on the jokes for my liking, but there’s a heart to this story that sets it apart from what we’ve seen from Gunn’s work at Marvel. It certainly has me looking forward to whatever is next in DC’s cinematic lineup.

Still playing Assassin's Creed Shadows. Very pretty game!!

A stylized, ink-toned depiction of Yasuke, a samurai warrior in traditional armor, wearing a conical hat that obscures most of his face. He is holding both hands in front of his chest in prayer. Two swords are sheathed at his side. The armor is detailed with intricate patterns and textures. The background is muted, drawing focus entirely to the figure.

Naoe, a ninja wearing a conical hat, dark clothing, and flower-stylized katana, stands on a branch overlooking a vast, forested mountain landscape with autumn colors and distant buildings under a cloudy sky.

I love UI icons. I wish more of my day-to-day work involved making them! Oh well. Here's some that I made a couple years ago for a project that never saw the light of day.

8 assorted icons, including a finger selecting something in a box; a percent sticker; a clock with a counter-clockwise arrow going around it, a down arrow with a yen sign in it, three stacked diamonds, an exclamation point in a circle, a megaphone, and a price tag

Random game Saturday: Most of the contents of the Japan-only Xenosaga Freaks are text-based (a text adventure game, a word puzzle game, and an encyclopedia), so I’ve never actually booted it up. I should check out the fan translation of that text adventure game one day though.

Been catching up on some indie games I missed this year in the lead up to the holidays. I'm almost finished with 1000xRESIST and it's definitely going to be on my favorites list. Incredibly deep, full of layers of important themes. By far one of the best sci-fi stories I've experienced in years.

Currently in a bit of a bout of superhero fatigue, so I’ve been reading creator-owned comics way more than anything from the big two lately. FML, The Moon Is Following Us, Public Domain, and Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees are all breaths of fresh air. #WeReadsComics

The Eyes of Kid Midas was a banger

The book cover for The Eyes of Kid Midas by Neal Shusterman. It features a young boy with blond hair wearing huge sunglasses, a blue and purple jacket, and a red shirt. His arms are outstretched, as if trying to summon something. The background is a purple sky with lightning bolts. The setting appears to be a small town with buildings on either side of the boy. The tagline reads: “Ultimate power has its costs”.

If I could just ignore them it’d be fine, but that’s tough for me to say in the moment when I see a chest just beyond a door I can’t open. I love the armor design in this game (more than any other DA title), but the rewards from those chests just aren’t ever worth the time it takes to get them.

010

Tyler Anderson @tandyq.zone · 19/11/2024

Like, the activities are all these time-consuming-but-simplistic environmental puzzles that my brain struggles to ignore. They’re the equivalent of junk food, where I’m engaged in the moment but then I look up at the clock and wonder what I’ve been doing and whether I want to pick up the game again.

Been playing more Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Feels like it’s just fine? Combat is good, writing is serviceable, but the activities they’ve scattered across the open zones are hampering my ability to enjoy the game.

A new Dragon Age game means a new Dragon Age protagonist to obsess over.

A player-made Qunari character from Dragon Age. She has blue skin, pointed ears, and large, textured horns that curve back from her head, with some decorative bands around them. She has a scar under her left eye and a rope tattoo running around her neck. She’s wearing an outfit with a high collar.

It's been a minute since I did a homescreen vibe check. Here's my setup for my personal and work focuses in iOS 18.

On the lefthand side of the screen are two small widgets arranged vertically. The top widget is the date, and below that is a podcast widget featuring “The Besties” podcast.

On the right side, there are four app icons arranged vertically:
1. Photos
2. Zenless Zone Zero
3. Balatro
4. Readwise Reader

At the bottom, there is a dock with four app icons:
1. Safari
2. Instagram
3. Apollo (for Reddit)
4. Messages (green icon with a chat bubble)

The wallpaper is a gradient from blue at the bottom to gold or brown at the top, creating a soft, abstract background.

At the top of the screen is a medium widget displaying the date and calendar. The calendar events are removed. Below that are two small widgets arranged side-by-side. The first is a podcast widget featuring "The Besties" podcast. The second is a Slack widget displaying the message unread count.

Below the widgets, there are five app icons:
1. Readwise Reader
2. Tot (from The Iconfactory)
3. Mail
4. Slack

At the bottom, there is a dock with four app icons:
1. Safari
2. Instagram
3. Apollo (for Reddit)
4. Messages (green icon with a chat bubble)

The background wallpaper is a 3D grid with a dark color scheme, giving it a futuristic, digital appearance. It's from The Iconfactory as well, and can be found in their Wallaroo app.
