Green herons drop bugs, small twigs, and even bread crumbs onto the water, stand motionless, and strike when a small fish investigates. I'd love to photo that behavior! But this heron just eyed me warily, then went deeper into the shadows to preen. #wildlifephotography #greenheron #mainewildlife

Set out on a quick paddle this morning, not expecting to see much ~ then this osprey appeared. I quietly watched from my kayak as it dove twice for lunch. I have many picd to wade through, but so many yard to-do's. Yet, I couldn't resist editing 1 pic to share with all of you. #wildlifephotography

When creating my wildlife calendars, I try to use current photos to keep the content fresh. This year, I had a lot of great eagle pics to choose from! I narrowed it down to these six - and had a hard time choosing just one. In the end, I went with a flight shot. #wildlifephotography #eagles

This past week I've had 1 hummingbird left in my gardens. All the remaining flowers must have felt like an all you eat buffet! This morning I woke up to 48 degrees . . . I have a feeling these pictures from yesterday might have been my last hummingbird captures of the 2026 season. #hummingbirds

I agree! Her mate joined her and stayed as well. They were tangled in fishing line three times in the last 4ish years - I'm hoping they're going to call our pond home next summer. Time will tell!

One August morning I watched our visiting banded loon take off, circle our pond & fly over me toward her official nesting pond. I thought: She's chick-less & recuperated- she must be heading 'home'- not daring to hope she'd still be here mid-Sept with her mate. Yet here they've stayed. #wildlife

These pics of a juvenile loon are from a winter adventure at Perkin's Cove here in Maine. It was coooold that day, but we love the ocean no matter the weather. Fun fact: Juveniles spend their first 2 or 3 yrs on the ocean before returning inland to their lakes. #loons #mainewildlife

I completed a writing thing & celebrated by going out on the lake. It was windy~ warm~ a hint of a t-storm~ when I came across our banded loon pair preening. These 2 pics are my favorites. The leg bands tell me this is the male. I swear he was posing. #loons #mainewildlife #wildlifephotography

I haven't posted in quite awhile. Life threw three health related curveballs at my family within one months time. I want to be creative. I need to be creative. But when I try, no words will come. So, instead, I'm falling into nature and collecting pics of interesting things I see.

Did you know? Roseate Spoonbills have a interesting way of feeding. They sweep their bills left and right and when they touch something that's edible, they close their bills quickly. They're foraging for fish or insects. #wildlifephotography

When I first got into photography, it was to capture wildlife behavior like this! What I thought I captured was a pretty series of a spoonbill landing and beginning to forage. Upon editing and zooming in - it turned out to be something quite different! #wildlifephotography #spoonbills

Whoops! I think this bluebird is a bit miffed at me! Two pair of bluebirds remain from a flock of 12 that showed up 3 weeks ago. I'm hoping they stay - I have two bluebird boxes set up, but I know my yard isn't the perfect open habitat they prefer. Still, fingers crossed! #wildlifephotography

How cute is that face? ❤ More opossum fun facts - their tail can grasp things like sticks or leaves, and it helps with balance when climbing. They also rarely get rabies. More pics and facts in the post before this one. #mainewildlife #backyardvisitors #wildlifephotography

I think they're adorable! After I saw it, I wondered what they ate too. They eat a lot of things, fruit, mice, eggs, nuts - but they will eat bird seed (I have feeders), pet food, and garbage too. Here's another cute pic, I'm still editing photos!

When temps turned 40 degrees in Maine, and the sun shone down warmly, a nose appeared in the opening under our shed. I think it had been hibernating under our shed, and came out to hydrate. I hope it stays nearby! #WildlifePhotography #MaineWildlife

I had a list of authorly to-do's ready to go in case my school had a snow day today. #1 on the list was to prep for next week's school visit here in Maine. But over my first cup of coffee this beautiful fox stepped from the woods. The to-do list can wait. #BackyardWildlife #WildlifePhotography

This beauty showed up late in the day yesterday. Whoa, can Sharp-shinned hawks fly! Zipping through trees, around the feeders, it was fun to watch, but not so easy to get flight shots. Luckily, my song birds had seen the danger early enough, and had taken to the woods. #naturephotography
