For all those folks defending Google Maps because map updates are automatic/beyond their control. They had the Appalachian Trail mislabeled for close to 5 years after a reroute causing a police dispatcher to tell me it was safe to continue on a trail leading me straight into a fire...

Its the week before classes start so sent an e-mail to the lab about having students sign up for meetings to discuss fall semester plans, and within an hour 4 of the 5 had already scheduled said meetings. Bodes well for a productive fall semester!

I wrote a letter to the editor to my local paper (the Morning Call) about speaking out for public lands, and it got published!!! If you'd like to speak out for Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument @protectwildutah.bsky.social has some great resources here: suwa.org/actions-you-...
Speak out to protect the planet
In April we celebrated the planet with Earth Day and Arbor Day; in the same month we also saw continued attacks on our public lands. The Senate voted to use the Congressional Review Act to overturn a mining ban in the area outside of Boundary Waters National Recreation Area. This follows a vote in the House in January along the same lines. The ban was put in place when environmental studies showed mining would cause irreparable harm to the area and a public comment period with approximately 98% of comments being in favor of the ban.

Using the CRA in this way was unprecedented, with Sen. David McCormick and Rep. Ryan Mackenzie both voting yes. A similar bill exists to overturn the management plan for Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

However we are still seeing the power of speaking out. The National Recreation Area in the Delaware Water Gap is the result of people speaking out against a proposed dam. On Earth Day, it was announced that a bill that would have weakened the Endangered Species Act was pulled. We must continue to speak out to protect our planet and open spaces in this country for generations to come.

Today’s important life lesson when calling the authorities to figure out how to get off the mountain that has caught on fire during your hike make sure they have up to date trail maps so when you tell them you are on the AT they know that’s leading you straight towards the fire and not safely down

Back in 2018 I learned our campus shuts off power for a day every summer and started my efforts to try and get more things on backup power, including HVAC for my fish room. Through the years I've reached out to facilities and many an administrator over this on multiple occasions.
