Pure ego? Since Lidar HW was still so expensive around a decade ago. Musk probably didn’t anticipate the rapid price drops - and/or he was overconfident in solving FSD for good back in 2016-2017.

Musk explains why Tesla Robotaxi is not running at night, and lidar is the answer
Elon Musk says Tesla Robotaxi is limited at night by pets that are hard to see. Lidar and radar handle that, and Tesla removed its radar in 2021.

“Musk wrote that post like Tesla just found a new problem. It didn’t. Cameras losing dark, low-contrast objects at night is the oldest limitation in the book, and it’s why everyone else put lidar and radar on their cars…” Teslarians, your hero is a moron. There, I said it. $TSLA $TSLAQ

I think this is one of the most hopeful lessons one can take from the rise of Musk: the constant churn of social media makes narrative more important than ever. Wielding informational power means getting off the treadmill and building out longer-term narratives. A better media world is possible!

Elon Musk is only possible because the endless churn of social media genuinely prevents people from seeing the narrative arc of people like Musk. We're too overwhelmed by information to understand. What Gibney's film accomplishes is integrating the disaggregated narrative we've all seen on socials

There have been so many impeachable offenses, but lying about how you were a hero on a day that 2,753 people died in NYC in the 9/11 disaster—when you were on the other side of town, safely calling local media to brag about how you now had the tallest downtown building—is such a despicable one
