(secondarily) In actual plays, the familiarity of the system to the audience can help. There's a shared language of terms within the hobby, and the basics of d20 roll over have that. I don't think design should be limited to that, but a more arcane system can be inscrutable to viewers!

Actual plays need punctuations of uncertainty and excitement, and that often comes from "big moments" that the dice create. It's why the Nat 20 is so effective in that space. The challenge is, the dice rolling should be interesting every time, rather than rote. Tricky, indeed!
