It’s an excellent book. I’m so grateful that someone on Twitter back in the day recommended it to me. I would love to thank them. 🤔 Perhaps recommending it to others is the thanks that person would most appreciate.

But thank you 🙏 even more @perrybaconjr.bsky.social for this astute analysis which is impossibly difficult to find elsewhere Calls for Dems over 70 to be ousted “could elevate ambitious climbers who stand for nothing but their personal ambitions over fighters we need to make 🇺🇸 a better democracy”
In fact, it was an example of the scenario I feared. Early last year, some Democratic activists, furious about 2024, were arguing that any Democratic officeholder over age 70 should be replaced by someone younger. They're wrong.
What Democrats really need is not necessarily younger members, but ones who fight hard, both for progressive policies and against Donald Trump and MAGA. I want Bernie Sanders (84) and Elizabeth Warren (77) on Capitol Hill, but not Josh Gottheimer (51) or Jared Golden (44). A fixation on age could elevate ambitious climbers who stand for nothing but their personal ambitions over the fighters we need to make America a better democracy.
But at least in Massachusetts, the younger candidate couldn't hoodwink voters into thinking that he stands for change or fight or vigor. After all, this is Seth Moulton. He so perfectly embodies the hold-power, do-nothing ethos that plagues Democratic politics that voters can easily discern. Despite serving in the House since 2015, he's not been a prominent figure in fighting Trump. He didn't propose anything particularly bold or creative during his brief 2020 presidential run. (You probably forgot that he ran.)

Canada’s choice
For Canada, the choice came down to either accepting severe but temporary economic instability or binding itself to a pseudodemocratic fiscal basket case of a nation whose only apparent foreign policy objective has become domination for the gratification of its president's slapdash vanity.

“The American president clearly did not know whom he was dealing with. He is following in the grand tradition of American leaders starting wars with people they don’t understand, then wondering what went wrong.”
While the decision to tough it out is iconically Canadian, Mr.
Carney's gesture will resonate far beyond Canada's borders. A gray banker - and not just any banker but one of the leading bankers in the world - has stood up and said that there's more to life than a ittle bit of money. The power of that recognition alone, at this oment in history, cannot be overstated. Mr. Trump's world, a world of transaction and submission, is not the only world we all have to live in.

👍Ha! I just responded with a description of Kaiser Wilhelm by Barbara Tuchman
THE ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM: THE ASTOUNDING ESP....
TWO
The Clever Kaiser and the Yellow Peril
LATE IN THE YEAR 1895, Kaiser Wilhelm had a revelation.
He decided to commit it to paper in the form of a draw-ing, and when he had finished he was delighted with his artistry; the ominous Oriental figure dominating the picture was truly admirable. Suddenly it inspired in his fertile mind a title in one succinct and striking phrase: Die gelbe Gefahr!-the Yellow Peril.
Europe had been shocked earlier in that year by the quick, cut-and-slash victory of Japan over the ancient colossus of China. He alone, the Kaiser believed, grasped the significance of that event. Germany,THE ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM: THE ASTOUNDING ESP...
France, and Russia had joined to force Japan to disgorge the larger part of her territorial gains and, as their price for thus coming to China's aid, had taken most of these gains for themselves. Tsingtao and a naval base on Kiaochow Bay had fallen to the Kaiser's share, but Wil-helm, who dealt in world dynamics, had been brooding over the rise of a new power in Asia. Vividly he saw its yellow hordes overwhelming Europe. "Under the glitter of the Christmas-tree candles," as he described it to his cousin Nicky, the Czar of Russia, he drew his vision on paper and ordered the court painter, Hermann Knackfuss, to immortalize the sketch in a painting.
The picture showed a Buddha riding upon a dragon through a thunderous sky, leaving smoking cities in ruins beneath him as he advances upon Europe. Apprehensively watching this apparition are seven longhaired ladies in helmets and breastplates, representing the nations of Europe, of whom the foremost, Ger-mania, with streaming blond locks beneath an eagle headdress, has drawn her sword and leans forward aggressively. Upon a height an archangel exhorts the ladies, "Peoples of Europe, guard your most precious possessions!"
Seized by the brilliance of his conception, the Kaiser caused copies to be engraved and presented to all the embassies in Berlin and to royal relatives of the variousTHE ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM. IHE ASIUUNDING ESM...
reigning houses and other distinguished persons.
Wilhelm's forays into personal diplomacy often dismayed the European chanceries, in some of which he was known as William the Sudden. Because he swung wildly between feelings of persecution and a rosy optimism, no one ever knew what to expect of the German Emperor. Bismarck said of him that he wanted it always to be Sunday." Wilhelm's Byzantine court assisted him in this illusion by providing him with his own morning paper, in a special imperial edition of one, made up of carefully excerpted items from the world press, printed in gold.
Wilhelm was interested in gold-plated news only and disliked above all else those tiresome visits from ministers with their reports of inconvenient facts that did not fit in with his schemes. To avoid listening to them, the Kaiser would walk up and down, do all the talking himself, and dismiss the minister in twenty minutes.
It was his task, he believed, to preserve the balance of Europe. Indeed, who but he in Europe was equal to it?
Government officials from the Chancellor down were nothing but a pack of clerks. Europe needed a master mind if it was not to fall apart under the fumbling of these petty bureaucrats. Dynastic rulers were the only persons fit to manage international affairs, but really it was not fair the whole burden should fall upon him.

But the day is past. The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.
You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil, and blood, and treasure, that it will cost us to maintain this declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means, and that posterity will triumph in that day's transaction, even although we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not.

Chapter 11 Gordon Wood’s Friends Divided For Jefferson, Jesus was just "an extraordinary man" & for Adams, claims for the divinity of Jesus had become an "awful blasphemy” Adams's sense of religious liberty & ecumenical toleration-"all Religions have Something good in them”…
Jefferson took all this amiably enough and suggested that people did not differ in religious opinions as much as was supposed. He agreed with Priestley, who had declared that if people candidly examined themselves,
"they would find that Unitarianism was the religion of all." It was "too late in the day," Jefferson said, "for men of sincerity to pretend they believe in the Platonic mysticisms that three are one, and one is three; and yet the one is not three, and the three are not one."59
Along with the French Revolution, religion was a major issue that divided the two men. Both Jefferson and Adams agreed in the belief in a supreme being who organized the universe, and both, like many other enlightened rationalists of the age, denied the divinity of Christ and thus the central Christian doctrine of the Trinity. For Jefferson, Jesus was just "an extraordinary man," and for Adams, claims for the divinity of Jesus had become an "awful blasphemy."60
Nevertheless, Adams had a much more acceptable view of religion than Jefferson. Although he did not put much stock in creeds or ecclesiastical authorities, he never became as hostile to organized religion or to orthodox Christianity as Jefferson. Adams certainly agreed that ancient Christianity had been corrupted and debased by "Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, and Christian Factions, above all the Catholicks"_ "Miracles are Miracles have rolled down in Torrents"—but he never mocked the Trinity as Jefferson did, never ridiculed it as "mere Abracadabra" foisted on the people by "the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus."61 Although Adams was certainly a Unitarian in his be-liefs, he treated "the doctrine of the Trinity" not as a joke but as "a Part of an immense system of doctrines of too inormous faith for me to digest." "Let the Wits joke; the Phylosophers sneer!" he said, but that was not his approach to religion. He always was, as he said in 1811,
"a Church going Animal."62
Adams believed that there was "in human nature, a solid, unchangeable and eternal foundation of Reli-gion." All he felt was awe and adoration in the face of
"the Author of the Universe," a universe that was infinite and eternal and in which Adams himself was "but an Atom, a Molecule." Indeed, to Adams God was so beyond all human understanding, so "altogether incomprehen-sible, and incredible" that he could just "as soon believe the Athanasian Creed, which asserted the traditional Roman Catholic belief in the Trinity."63
Adams's sense of religious liberty and ecumenical toleration-"all Religions have Something good in them"—came from this sense of humility in an "in-scrutable and incomprehensible" universe, from his deeply held belief that Christianity was "Resignation to

And to “criticising things” this passage from @vermontgmg.bsky.social in “Watergate: a New History” sticks with me & I think of almost daily while reading the newspapers
when the FBI could pursue domestic security and intelligence investigations and aimed to better balance the free speech protections of the First Amendment. Even the U.S. Postal Service issued a series of reforms, meant to limit the long-standing practice of "mail covers" that allowed the FBI and others to surveil the mail of targets and suspects.
One of the biggest cultural changes, though, came in the press. After a generation of journalists that had probably trusted government too much came a generation of journalists who seemed to believe that Watergates existed inside every government office and corporate headquarters. "This post-Watergate fervor left the feeling that the only government reporting worth doing was government screw-ups and venality," one media history explained."
Nixon left all his worst enemies emboldened. As journalist Teddy White wrote in his 1975 history of the era, Breach of Faith, the news media in the capital would never look at the White House the same again: "If Nixon has bequeathed to his presidential successors a permanently hostile news system, he has cursed them all." White's worst fears indeed came to pass-and more."Book cover

A few days ago, I told you about our new case to stop the 15% rate increase Duke Energy is proposing. The interest was huge, so here's some more detail:
- Duke Energy Carolinas - which serves mainly central and western
NC - is asking permission to raise rates by about 15%, to begin early next year. (Note: Duke Energy Progress serves mainly eastern NC.)
- It has to ask permission because it's a monopoly. That's how our state law is written.

jeffjacksonnc • 13h - Author
Duke gets to be a monopoly, but the check on their power is that rates are set by our Utilities Commission.
- The Commission has five members. Two are appointed by the Governor, one by the State Treasurer, and two on the recommendations of the Speaker of the House and the Senate President Pro Tempore.
All must be confirmed by the General Assembly.
- Our law says rates must be "fair both to the public utilities and to the consumer."

jeffjacksonnc • 13h - Author
It uses a rough formula that takes into account the value of the utility's property, its expenses, its revenue, and a "fair return for its shareholders."

- What constitutes a "fair return for its shareholders" is open to debate, but our law goes into some detail: "[E]nable the public utility by sound management to produce a fair return for its shareholders, considering changing economic conditions.... to maintain its facilities and services in accordance with the reasonable requirements of its customers in the territory covered by its franchise, and to compete in the market for capital funds on terms that are reasonable and that are fair to its

customers and to its existing investors."
- Currently, the Commission has set Duke Energy Carolinas rate of return for shareholders at 10.1%. At that rate, DEC brought in over $2b in net income last year.
・・・
- Part of Duke's new request is to increase its shareholder return to 10.95%.
- Our request is to lower its shareholder return to 7.4%. Our review shows this is sufficient for Duke to meet its needs to invest in the build-out that energy demand requires.

Our number would also save affected NC families a couple hundred dollars a year.
- Finally, on data centers: the framework utilities have used for 100 years wasn't built for single customers that show up needing hundreds of megawatts at once. The core question is who pays when one giant customer requires major new generation and transmission. Our position is that families and small businesses shouldn't be the backstop for those costs.

jeffjacksonnc • 13h • Author
So we've asked for very large users, like data centers, to have their own rate class, with protections built around how much energy they use.

Things like: sign a long-term contract, at least 15 years, so they can't trigger a huge buildout and then leave town; put money down up front, like a deposit, in case the project falls through; cover the costs if they exit early instead of handing them to you; create an option for these customers to build their own generation; and power down when the grid is stretched during peak demand period, including weather emergencies.

The process going forward involves hearings before the Utilities Commission. They begin July 7th, then the parties file briefs and the Commission issues its decision, which we expect later this year.
We've submitted 700 pages worth of testimony, so we're making a highly detailed case.
That's a quick summary. I'll keep you posted.

There are heroes among us like Dr. Kahn There are also cowards & enablers among us like the organizers of the conference @amdiabetesassn.bsky.social who apparently have so little regard for members who might be pregnant that they hold a conference in LA where all abortion care is banned.
Hours after he was removed, Dr. Kahn received an email from the American Diabetes Association stating that his behavior had violated the conference's code of conduct.
"You were respectfully informed that distribution of materials was not permitted and given the opportunity to remain in the meeting if you stopped handing out the materials," the email read. "When you continued the behavior, we had no choice but to remove you for the remainder of the meeting."
The email went on to note that there are "a lot of logistics and security measures taken when a federal official is in attendance." A spokesperson for the N.I.H. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Several of the researchers said they believed they were removed partly because the association feared repercussions from the Trump administration.
A spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association wrote in an emailed statement that the conference's code of conduct "expects that all participants will conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner. This ensures that the meeting remains safe, productive, and centered on advancing diabetes science."
Dr. Kahn said that the editorial aimed to advance science.
"It is no longer enough to stand idly by or work behind the scenes with lawmakers," the experts wrote in their editorial. "Moreover, it is no longer appropriate to fret about political backlash. Now is the time to recognize and fight to reverse the spiraling fall of the United States of America's status as the foremost nation in health care innovation."

For now, Trump and his allies are insulated from scrutiny by a mostly feckless and supine Republican majority in Congress. He is still able to end careers with a few posts on Truth Social.

Ultimately, political reform will take the shape of a partisan project
— a specific, party-driven gambit and not a broad bipartisan compromise. This could be passage of a stronger, revitalized Voting Rights Act along with a national ban on partisan gerrymandering and mid-decade redistricting — in other words, some combination of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the stillborn For the People Act - or it could be something more radical, like expanding the size of the House (which has been capped at 435 members for nearly a century), legalizing electoral fusion or moving the country toward proportional representation.
Whatever Democrats do, they must do something. If the aim of our political system is fair and meaningful representation for all Americans, then we are far from the target and receding even further.
You could even, to paraphrase the words of an old socialist saying. argue that American society stands at a crossroads: either transition to democracy or regression into barbarism.

Germany has approved a plan to spend up to a trillion euros on defense and infrastructure. It has also set the goal of creating the strongest military in Europe by 2039 (ironically enough, the 100th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland).
