👉 The “engaged” mechanism (where politically interested citizens favor DIs) mainly applies in wealthier regions, reflecting a desire for greater participation rather than institutional grievances.

👉 The “enraged” mechanism (where politically dissatisfied citizens favor DIs) is stronger in poorer regions, likely reflecting a desire to make the system more responsive to their needs.

New publication with Emilien Paulis and David Talukder! We examine how regional economic conditions shape public support for direct and deliberative democratic innovations (DIs). Our findings show that common explanations of support for DIs are context-dependent: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

... We show that citizens' perceptions of bias are widespread in 🇩🇪, 🇳🇱, 🇬🇧, 🇵🇱 and 🇪🇸. Most notably, we find that the direction of perceived bias mirrors one’s own ideological position. Left- and right-leaning citizens tend to associate institutional actors with the opposite (‘hostile’) ideology. (3/3)

The partner’s attitude toward immigrants and their political discontent - which are partly shaped by the partner's own occupation and education - affect one's chance to vote for the populist radical right, regardless of their own political attitudes. (3/4)

.. husband’s occupation affects the wife’s chance to vote for a populist radical right party, whereas the wife's education influences the husband’s vote choice. These effects can be partly understood as ‘units of stratification’, but also as ‘contexts of socialization’. (2/4)
