If you’re interested in transition design and transition studies, or in more general issues around sustainability, regeneration, and social justice, I highly recommend this book. As the title suggests, it’s a critical engagement with discourses around “abundance”, popular in the US right now. But…

🚜 Britain’s farming sector is in crisis. Global over-production keeps commodity prices down, and state support that once propped up private farms has largely disappeared. The solution lies in commoning agriculture. 1/2

Here @adamvaughan.bsky.social shows why we need social control of water. Out yesterday, our report makes the case for treating water as a shared resource, not a corporate asset. It asks "should we prioritise using water to grow food or to cool data centres?" 🔗 www.in-abundance.org/latest/beyon...

1/3 One of the best and most refined arguments out there for water in public hands. Worth the read. Water should work for us but is really run to make rich people richer. Yet "nationalisation" isn't always the answer. in-abundance.org/reports/beyo... @abundance-org.bsky.social @kmilb.bsky.social

3/3 That's why, more than nationalisation, we need democratic ownership and control of our water. Abundance’s new paper says it’s not just about who owns things. It’s about who controls them - and how to make sure that’s us, the public.

England's broken water system needs a change of ownership. Keir Milburn & Bertie Russell argue for @abundance-org.bsky.social that we need more than that: a new model built around social control of water, prioritising & empowering workers & communities. www.in-abundance.org/reports/beyo...

A report out today from @bertrussell.bsky.social and I for @abundance-org.bsky.social advocating for social control of the failed privatised water companies via democratic governance. We look at, and learn the lessons from, four different attempts to reorganise water services along these lines.

Abundance @abundance-org.bsky.social · 26/06/2025
Thames Water might soon be brought into a Special Administration Regime, but public ownership alone won’t fix a system rigged for private profit. Without real social control, we risk repeating the same mistakes.
Should we prioritise ensuring water is used to irrigate fields for crops

...or for cooling data centres?
