Assistant Professor of Modern Japanese History | Northwestern University Department of History
Evanston, Illinois, The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of modern Japan. We particularly encourage applications from historians who consider connections across and within the Japanese empire, the process of decolonization and its aftermath, and the global or regional contexts of Japanese history. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Asianists both in and beyond the History Department. This is a full-time position starting September 1, 2027. A letter of application, CV, writing sample (no longer than an article or dissertation/book chapter), and three letters of recommendation (sent separately) must be submitted electronically via the link on our departmental website at http://www.history.northwestern.edu/ by October 30, 2026. Please address any questions regarding this position to Annerys Cano at annerys.cano@northwestern.edu. Salary The expected base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $105,000. This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation. Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal comparators; and external market pay for comparable jobs. Assistant Professor (Ancient World History) | The Chinese University of Hong Kong
New Territories, Hong Kong, China, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Applications are invited for:- Department of History Assistant Professor (Ancient World History)  (Ref: 260001AJ) (Closing Date: October 1, 2026) The Department of History at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invites applications for a full-time, substantiation-track post at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Ancient World History, beginning August 2, 2027. We welcome applicants with specialisations in areas including (but not limited to) ancient Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean world in the period c. 1000 BCE–500 CE. While chronological and thematic specialisations are open, the ability to teach ancient Greek and/or Roman history is highly desirable. The post is open to all qualified candidates, both local and international.   CUHK is one of Asia’s top international research universities, ranked #18 globally in 2027 by QS and #44 by THE. Our department has the largest cluster of World History expertise in Hong Kong and the wider region. We hope to recruit a historian who can complement and expand our existing subject coverage, helping us achieve our goal of becoming Asia’s leading centre for the study of World History. The primary language of research and instruction in World History at CUHK is English; knowledge of Chinese is not required. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to high standards in both research and teaching. An active research agenda and clear plans for future English-language publications (including a monograph and peer-reviewed journal articles) are essential. In addition to delivering the department’s introductory survey course on Ancient World History (HIST2005), a key responsibility will be to further develop the World History curriculum, creating new courses in line with the candidate’s interests and the department’s needs. The normal teaching load is two courses per term, reduced to one course in the first term of employment. Qualifications Applicants should: i.    have obtained a doctoral degree by August 1, 2027; ii.    have an active research agenda and clear plans for future English-language publications; iii.    be committed to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and iv.    be ready to supervise postgraduate students. Salary and fringe benefits for the post will be highly competitive. Appointment will normally be made on  contract basis for up to three years initially, which may be renewed for a further three years. Subject to funding, performance, and mutual agreement, this may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation (equivalent to U.S. tenure), either when the aggregate service period reaches six years, or sooner upon completing one year’s service, subject to special application and recommendation as appropriate. Application Procedure Applicants should complete the online application form, upload a letter of introduction, a CV, and one writing sample. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide further materials, including letters of recommendation (to be addressed to the Department Secretary directly by the referees) and evidence of experience as both researchers and teachers. The University only accepts and considers applications submitted online for the post above via the CUHK career site. For more information and to apply online, please visit http://career.cuhk.edu.hk.

Happy to share the AAS Diversity & Equity Committee is sponsoring an @asianstudies.org Digital Dialogues session 8/19 "Academic Job Market 101: Becoming Familiar & Planning Ahead"! I'll introduce fundamentals & what to expect when you're expecting (to graduate)! www.asianstudies.org/jobs-profess...
An announcement with the AAS DIGITAL DIALOGUES logo at the top, with a banner that says "Academic Job Market 101: Becoming Familiar & Planning Ahead" followed by Wednesday, August 19, 2026
11:00am-12:00pm Eastern Time
What sort of timeline does the academic job market operate on? As a graduate student, how can you be strategic about your fields of study? How do you select letter writers? What do job applications actually require? How can you set yourself up for success long before you go on the market? The fundamentals can sometimes feel opaque and intimidating, particularly for those who are in area studies, and particularly in our current moment. This talk, geared towards graduate students and recent PhDs, will be an introduction to the basics of the job market. This session, sponsored by the AAS Diversity and Equity Committee, will help those considering academic careers to become aware of what the market can look like (particularly in North American contexts).

Time will be reserved for Q&A, but please note that this session will not be recorded.

Registration for this webinar is open to AAS Members only. Not an AAS member? Join now.
