EU vs Meta: ..addictive design of Instagram and Facebook breaches the Digital Services Act. The investigation highlights that features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications and highly personalised recommender systems create addictive loops, especially for minors and vulnerable adults

Today, the European Commission has preliminarily
found that Meta's addictive design of Instagram and
Facebook breaches the Digital Services Act. The
investigation highlights that features such as infinite
scroll, autoplay, push notifications and highly
 personalised recommender systems create addictive
loops, especially for minors and vulnerable adults.
The platform's current mitigation tools such as
 time-management settings, parental controls and
safety-centre resources, are insufficient, as they can
be easily dismissed or demand a high level of
 technical expertise from parents.
The Commission now expects concrete design
changes: disabling autoplay and infinite scroll by
 default, introducing meaningful screen-time breaks
and re-balancing the recommender algorithm away
 from pure engagement-driven optimisation.
Protecting the physical and mental wellbeing of
Europeans must be a priority for all digital platforms.
The DSA gives us a clear framework to hold them
accountable, and I am fully committed to enforcing it.

This is fantastic news @reiniervanlanschot.volteuropa.org regarding the “Cloud and AI Development Act” 💜
Greens MEP to co-lead talks on tech sovereignty bill
by Mathieu Pollet • 12 MINUTES AGO • 2 MINUTES READ
Reinier van Lanschot, a Dutch member of the European Parliament for the Greens
group, will be one of the top two lawmakers helming the work on the EU's new cloud and
Al bill, he confirmed to POLITICO.
"Al is moving so fast that the world we're in today is already different from yesterday's,
and tomorrow's will be different again. We have no time to waste to minimize risks and
seize opportunities in a European way," van Lanschot said in a statement.
The Cloud and Al Development Act will aim to reduce the bloc's dependencies on
foreign technology, a push driven largely by fears that Europe's overreliance on U.S.
firms could be weaponized by Washington.
"One thing is certain amid the uncertainty: Europe needs a strong, independent, trusted
cloud ecosystem. One that earns public trust instead of loses it, as we see playing out in
 the U.S.," van Lanschot stressed.
He will co-lead negotiations on behalf of the internal market committee, after the
Conference of Presidents — the Parliament's top political forum — overruled the initial
decision to allocate the file to the sole industry committee on Wednesday.
The proposal will seek to boost homegrown tech champions through a broad industrial
policy push, require member countries to assess and act to reduce their dependencies
and direct more public money towards European firms via public procurement. The
internal market committee cited these provisions in challenging the original attribution,
 and justifying its involvement.
Lawmakers in the industry committee have yet to allocate the file to a political group
after the decision was postponed until the challenge was settled.

It also seems as if they asked for an 18 month competitive head start:

Reading the details, Apple wants a 18 months competitive head start. I’m not surprised that the EC didn’t go for that.

This is not the first time: 17 February 1933 in Germany, Hermann Göring (excerpt from Wikipedia):
Bereits am 17. Februar 1933 hatte er die
