At the @esa.int #PISCO and @snowpi.bsky.social hackathon last week, Anna, Kirk, and Tabea joined 30+ researchers from around the world to dig through gigabytes of #EO and climate model data to tackle some exciting polar questions ❄️ 🧊 Let's dig into a couple below👇
DTU Space team! Both Kirk and Tabea were mentors for two projects and Anna (in the middel) were a participant. Wanna know more about the project they did? Check out the following posts :) Not all time was spend coding. Some evenings were also spend enjoying the nice settings. Here you see Kirk, Kristiina (DMI) and Tabea enjoying a nice sunset overlooking the water.

☀️ Spring has finally arrived in Copenhagen ☀️ The team celebrated the good weather by painting flower pots and planting some (small-ish) sunflowers to brighten up our offices during our social event🌻

Last week, researchers came together for the Danish Antarctic Science Seminar at @ucph.bsky.social to discuss the most recent studies of Antarctic science! @tabea-rettelbach.bsky.social showed how the @esa.int Digital Twin can be used to explore "what-if" scenarios for the Antarctic Ice Sheet ❄️

Our colleague @tabea-rettelbach.bsky.social is developing dynamic data cubes for #EO data over ice sheets (literally 🧊). The goal is to make complex geospatial datasets easier to find, access, and use for e.g. modelers. #datacubes @icelink-project.bsky.social #PISCO #DTC_icesheets

After joining many many hackathons as a participant in the past years, this is the first time for me as an instructor; and I'm loving the experience and motivational atmosphere just the same! Thank you @polarres.bsky.social for making this possible 👩‍💻

AWI researchers have mapped 19,000 driftwood in Alaska and northwestern Canada for the first time. The data will help to better understand coastal processes, carbon storage and environmental changes such as storm surges and erosion. www.awi.de/en/about-us/... Photo: Carl Stadie

In Alaska verschwindet binnen Stunden ein See. Der Grund: tauender Permafrost. Forscher wollen nun wissen, wann das System kippen könnte und ganze Landschaften verändern.

Three new papers co-authored by @tabea-rettelbach.bsky.social have just been published! A little outside of our usual focus on the cryosphere, as these studies span broader Arctic remote sensing applications: aerial imagery 🛩️, methane emissions🫧, driftwood 🪵. Details and links in the comments ⬇️
Preparing for some UAV flights in the eerie field work weather at the Finnish Siikaneva wetland. A UAV image looking down on the Finnish Siikaneva bog site. From the different vegetation microtopographies, we could quantify the wetland's methane emissions throughout the seasons.

Cryosphere
In the Cryosphere Research Group at DTU Space, we monitor the recent and ongoing changes of the ice-covered regions of the Earth, including ice sheets and sea ice, using observations from satellites, aircraft and ground. During the past decades, satellites have observed a decline in sea ice and an increased mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet. Our research leads to an increasingly accurate understanding of these rapid changes, thus enabling society to mitigate climate change.
