Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 21/01/2026True energy security doesn’t come from choosing a “better” gas supplier. It comes from needing less gas at all: ✔️ faster renewables deployment ✔️ electrification and grid expansion ✔️ energy efficiency ✔️ serious monitoring of supplier concentration 📄 Full report: Europe’s Selective Blindness on Gas 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 21/01/2026In the current political landscape, especially under US 'energy dominance', Energy is no longer just a commodity. It’s a geopolitical tool. Recent debates linking LNG supply to EU climate and trade policies show how dependence on a dominant supplier turns into leverage—and lock‑in. 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 21/01/2026EU legislation effectively treats “non‑Russian” gas as diversified. But importing a majority of gas from any single country—ally or not—creates risks: • price volatility • higher costs • geopolitical pressure That’s not real energy security. 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Between 2019 and 2025, EU gas imports from Russia fell by more than 80%. At the same time, US LNG imports to Europe increased nearly six‑fold. When Norway is treated as part of Europe’s energy system, over 59% of Europe’s LNG now comes from the US. 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Europe says it has diversified away from Russian gas. But the data tells a different story. A new analysis @piria.bsky.social Raffaele Piria, Hannah Lentschig, Louise van Schaik and I just published shows the EU has largely swapped one dependency for another—from Russia to the US. 🧵⬇️ 142

Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 16/02/2024I am aware of all that, what I am trying to say is that we don't need to assume farmers' views switched, it's just as likely that the proclimate ones, who also benefit from the Energiewende, and the ones protesting and supporting AfD are simply different people being mobilized by different messages 310
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024They don't necessarily have to be the same individuals. When 100 000 protest, 87 900 000 stay home. 300
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024I'm not an expert, my wife worked for a couple of years in a research project on waste management, so I mostly had stories about things that do not work. You aren't the 1st person to have this opinion, but in general, Norwegians (and outsiders) see NO as greener than it really is, so I wonder 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024It leads to losing important nutrients on the one hand and on the other - incentivizes high levels of waste, not food waste reduction. In fact, to run the biogas plant, Oslo has to import waste from Sweden, reducing food waste which should be the goal will make the Oslo biogas supply chain obsolete. 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024What I know is that Norway doe snot have plastic recycling facilities so it has to export that to German facilities (wonder about the carbon footprint of that). Secondly, converting waste to energy is pretty low on the waste use pyramid. Take Oslo's biowaste scheme. 2/3 000
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024ok, I don't know the numbers to compare with the rest of the developed world, a bottle deposit scheme is not something special, and Norwegian plastic bottles are not multi-use, like in Germany, but just recyclable for PET. 1/3 000
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 15/02/2024out of curiosity, when you say that Norway has one of the most efficient management and recycling systems, what do you mean and what is this based on? I am not completely challenging this view, but we might also remember that Norway has very high per capita waste rates, even by OECD standards. 100
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 14/02/2024IRA is probably one policy that Trump will not touch because of the industrial benefits, so I am not sure the US will be out of the race. It might be out of the UNFCCC process, but this could prove more problematic for the rest of the world. 000
Kacper Szulecki @szulecki.bsky.social · 14/02/2024But onshore does not have to be developed in Finnmark (only). The biggest anti-wind lobby is secondary home/cabin owners using 'nature' as shorthand for their esthetic interest. If we had cabins on the continental shelf, like Sponge Bob, we would phase out oil and gas production by 2030 110
