Psychosis was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. It's erratic, unpredictable, & constantly adapts to deceive the victim. I wish I could impart some surefire way of besting it, but there are simply too many variables. I only ask that we extend patience to those suffering. And love.

A few key details were edited (I have never and will never write about any kind of harm coming to babies/children, imagined or otherwise) but, yes, this experience inspired that story

After all that - I sought help, got the right meds, and haven't had an episode in years. I am not smart or strong for this. I am EXTREMELY LUCKY. Many in similar shoes are not, & my heart breaks for them all. It easily could have been me, and I am endlessly grateful that it wasn't.

In this tug-of-war in my brain, between two worlds, I ultimately concluded that "reality" was something I no longer cared about. The only thing I cared about was love. & that love was the thing I decided to let dictate what was or wasn't real. My North Star. The delusions couldn't adapt to that.

But...I was scared. I didn't want to make that sacrifice. My daughter was happy and alive here. I was very worried that she wasn't in "the real world". So...I turned my back on all of humanity. Believing fully that I was choosing an illusion over countless real lives. That I had doomed everyone.

The voices became stronger and more desperate over time, telling me again and again that time was running out and that they needed me. That I needed to jump ship on the simulation for the sake of restoring reality and rescuing billions of people. I believed every word of what they said, like 2+2=4

In hindsight, these are classic abuser tactics - cut the victim off from all loved ones, position yourself in such a way that you're the only figure they trust & all information they receive is filtered through you. And the flattery/love-bombing! Wow, I'm your chosen one? Of course I'll follow you!

They told me that mental health medication was how the overlords blocked communication channels, that anyone I'd ask for help would be conditioned agents strategically placed to placate me so that I would allow myself to remain trapped in their system. That if I cared about humanity, I'd trust them

Mundane sights & sounds were suddenly interpreted through an apocalyptic lens. I once went to use a deep fryer - the sound of the oil was now the sound of fluids in the lab getting spilled. The batter crackling in the basket was suddenly countless nanobots rendering complicated visuals. Scary shit!

I began to experience audio hallucinations as well, voices in my head claiming to be members of a "Resistance". They told me that they had hacked into the simulation I was in to deliver messages to me, explained that all of humanity was trapped in laboratories and being experimented on by scientists

I ultimately rationalized that there were more consequences for treating a living baby as dead than treating a dead baby as living. I assumed that the living baby was my brain being kind to me, and that I would embrace this hallucination for as long as I could. The psychosis adapted to this mindset

Weeks after my daughter was born, I would periodically look at her and see a withered corpse. These visuals lasted for seconds at a time, if that. Almost like a strobe effect - live, dead, live, dead. I believed that the living baby was the hallucination, that I was too distraught to see the truth
