I will give him this: James Hetfield is very good at doing Metallica.

You also can't see the fake twang on a spectrogram, so be thankful for that.

You can probably guess where the hook starts from looking at the waveform, but what you can't see as easily is how all the instruments completely disappear under the vocals, and duck obnoxiously every time a kick or snare hits. Music designed for blasting out of an Alexa-enabled Bluetooth speaker.

I listened to it again to make sure I wasn't misremembering, but nope. If you're trying to learn audio engineering and need a good lesson in how not to use a compressor or limiter, "Choosin' Texas" is one of the worst, most amateur examples I've ever heard. Hashtag gain staging!

I'm playing Golden Sun for the first time. Just finished the first lighthouse. I'll keep going because I like the gameplay and I know it's one of the most beloved RPGs on the GBA, but I think I might be too stupid for this game.

And not for nothing, you'd never see this article written about all the white people who "claim" they've never heard Future. Fuck these freaks.

Also also, while I'm griping about pop country, if you really want a bleak picture of modern country music, go look up a song called "She Had Me at Heads Carolina," a near 1:1 copy of "Heads Carolina, Tails California" so shameless it name-checks the song it's ripping off.

synthmage @synthmage.online · 27/09/2026
Also, there are a million mid-tempo cheating songs in the country music canon, and a lot of them sound just as derivative as this one does. I guarantee a lot of people have heard this and couldn't pick it out of a lineup of all the things it's deliberately copying.

I have heard this song. I even think the song is pretty good! Unfortunately it's performed by someone very obviously trying to affect a nonspecific Southern accent (and not pulling it off), and mixed like absolute shit so it's exhausting to listen to.

Just had the Trolli Mountain Dew Zero and it does taste a lot like a weird cough syrup I had to take when I was like 4 years old and unfortunately I love it.

Not just during the hiring process either! All the weird tea leaf reading TV detective nonsense these guys picked up from "The Seventeen Secrets for Not Giving a Fuck at Business Success" just dictates how a lot of these people run their departments...or entire companies! They all suck to work for!

"You won't be a good employee if you have something to drink in your interview" is just astrology bullshit for LinkedIn guys. Sorry.

There's a cottage industry of self-help books for Very Important Serious Business guys, and they're full of pseudo-insightful pablum just like this. The entire well of admin jobs in corporate America has been poisoned by people reinventing these little lie detector tests for the hiring process.

Back in the '10s when I was an even stupider dipshit than I am now, I was a sustainer for my local NPR station. Really happy that delusion passed. Weird organization full of useless delusional freaks.

I swear I don't mean to post about AI all the time, but it makes me so mad that we're on a trajectory where all of our lives are handed over to fucking data brokers and advertising firms and we just have to sit and watch it happen. I want a world where cretins like Sam Altman live in a mud hole.

synthmage @synthmage.online · 23/09/2026
See right now, we and Anthropic and Microsoft and nVidia all agree, not formally of course because that would be illegal, but we're kinda all on the same page about this stuff. So you gotta make a law that it's okay for us to be like this.

synthmage @synthmage.online · 23/09/2026
OpenAI is trustworthy. We're not gonna do anything bad. Pinky swear. But that's why we need to make sure nobody makes OpenAI 2, because those guys would probably be evil. Honestly, I don't even think about losing market share. But what if our competitor ended the world?! Can't let that happen.
100
synthmage @synthmage.online · 23/09/2026
Well we only have one option then. Better have the state create a subservient regulatory body that protects these companies from punishment, carves them out of racketeering laws, and restricts competitors from entering the market because of how dangerous that would be. For humanity, obviously.

I probably should have included CoD:MW3 as part of my Xbox 360 era, but my enjoyment of FPS games all but completely vanished when I stopped smoking weed.

I'm doing the 9 games thing. It's funny how this reveals that I suddenly got about 120 hours of free time during C19.
A 3x3 grid of the cover art of "my 9 games"
The games are:

Mega Man Battle Network (2001, GBA)
Tetris (1989, GB/DMG)
Pokemon: Yellow Version (Special Pikachu Edition) (1999, GBC/CGB)
Syphon Filter 3 (2001, PSX/PS1)
Forza Motorsport 3 (2008, X360)
Persona 5 Royal (PC, 2022)
Fight Night Champion (2011, X360)
Resident Evil 4 (2005, GCN)
Need for Speed Underground (2003, GCN)

Unless and until you reserve your vote for people who will steadfastly refuse to give reactionaries an inch on ANYTHING, your vote means nothing. You are not "voting out fascism." You aren't doing anything. At best you're prolonging the fight & legitimizing the idea that human rights are negotiable.
010
synthmage @synthmage.online · 20/09/2026
This is why the liberal "lesser evil"/"blue no matter who" conception of voting is useless. You accomplish nothing by voting a Republican out of office if their replacement is willing to compromise with Republicans. On anything ever, but especially on trans people's human rights.
120
synthmage @synthmage.online · 20/09/2026
If you do not see that protecting the rights of trans people is one of the—if not the singular—most important fronts in the fight against fascism, but you're constantly up in arms about voting out fascists, you fundamentally do not understand the fight you are in.

If you get onto bsky dot app and reply to someone with every available pride flag emoji in their username to tell them "Actually, Castro killed gay people," you're gonna feel the waistband of your underwear snapping against your forehead for the rest of the day. That's nobody's fault but your own!

synthmage @synthmage.online · 20/09/2026
You can come on here and write the 10,000th polemic about the failures of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution if you feel so compelled, but you're telling people not to make memes about the Kirk Murk. You are a soldier in a war that has already been fought and settled. Your side lost.

Even if you wanna get into the weeds about how many deaths were/weren't directly attributable to Mao, you're never gonna convince an online leftist to hate him for killing landlords. Doesn't matter if he threw them into an industrial shredder with his own two hands and made their kids watch.

I'm the type of moron who falls for it every time David Duke endorses someone running for office as a Democrat, and I think this person is telling the truth! I'm also hitting myself in the head with a big mallet right now!

It's the right move to turn the Ed Sheeran tour into a front in the culture war. Make chuds profess their allegiance to some weird pasty white guy singing about sex in a way that makes you doubt he knows what it is. However, I will not be thinking about it anymore. Best of luck to all involved.

certified Arch Linux moment
Screenshot of an Arch-announce Digest e-mail, which is a newsletter you can subscribe to for notifications about, usually, stuff that is gonna break the next time you install package upgrades on your Arch Linux computer.

It says:
Message: 1
Date: Fri, 12 Jun 2026 18:41:28 -0000
From: "Arch Linux: Recent news updates: Campbell Jones"
        <arch-announce@lists.archlinux.org>
Subject: [arch-announce] Active AUR malicious packages incident
To: arch-announce@lists.archlinux.org
Message-ID: <178128968875.1115.9742495653011810252@archlinux>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

We are currently experiencing a high volume of malicious package adoptions and updates in the Arch User Repository.

We are actively working to track down existing malicious commits and attempting to prevent additional malicious commits from being pushed.
While this is happening, and while we work to create a more permanent solution, users may see issues with the following:

- Creating new accounts on the AUR
- Pushing package updates
- Adopting or creating new packages

We continue to encourage all users of AUR packages to review *all* PKGBUILD and install script changes when updating, especially during this time.
If you notice suspicious commits to a package that you use, please reach out to Arch staff via the aur-general mailing list with more information.

You know what will work, though? Give sick people a digital Magic 8 Ball (if it's covered by their insurance, of course) and let that direct their treatment. I think that's gonna fix a lot of the stuff that's going on.

You think, "hmm, what if we created incentives for people with an interest in medicine to receive formal education without having to go into debt for the rest of their lives, and maybe improve the working conditions for providers so they stop leaving the field" but nah. That's stupid.

It's not fun to be told you need medical testing to determine if you have a serious illness and then find out it'll be a few months before you can get the testing done. But unfortunately this is the only healthcare system that works, so.

I wish we had a way to gather statistics on how many more Fudge Rounds got sold after that "Rich Men North of Richmond" song was released, on account of people suddenly remembering Fudge Rounds.
