The 1978 animated film version of WATERSHIP DOWN, when I was 5. My mom was unfamiliar with the source material; all she knew was that it was about rabbits. I was terrified by the middle and devastated by the end, and insisted on a light on in my bedroom for YEARS afterwards.

A white Hyundai kei truck in a field. It’s a small truck with a long bed.

While walking the dog this morning I saw 2 Ford F-150s. One was oooold; it had a 2-seat cab and a bed long enough for lumber. The other was new, much taller, with a 4-seat cab and a bed literally half the size of the older pickup. That is not a truck for a person who actually needs a truck!

Props to past!Sylvia, who booked a vacation day for today. She couldn't have known current!Sylvia would have a funeral AND a parent in the hospital yesterday, but boy howdy a day on the couch with a cozy poodle absolutely hits the spot right now. (The parent says he is "feeling much better" today.)

I’m not super sure why my stepdad had to fill this form out to visit the US (he’s lived in a lot of places and I’m not sure which of them he has citizenship in, but not Canada—he’s a PR). Fortunately my parents figured out they were being scammed BEFORE the credit card charge succeeded.

At least here in Canada, there are also semi-scam sites that charge you up to several hundred dollars to do this paperwork. I say semi-scam because apparently you usually do get the correct document, but you also pay two to five times what you should.

Just saw an article this week where the headline was like “using AI tools saves researchers 7 hours per week” but then almost the first paragraph said like “… but they spend most of that time checking what rhe AI tools did” 😑

I have to-do lists, and a planner, and several digital calendars, and a shopping list, and spreadsheets. *And also* I cannot conceive of any way in which trying to download all of this to an AI “agent” would improve my life. (Even if I wanted to try that, which I 100% do not.)

Update: Someone told me to “just say [I] know nothing about fashion” (true! Top marks!) and someone else told ne to “just say [I’m] a miserable kvnt [sic] and move on” (a little harsh, but full marks for creative spelling). The way a comments section can read “it’s weird to cheer the shoes” as >>

Sylvia Izzo Hunter @sylwrites.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I didn’t even know that much 🤣 I expect if I tell my much more fashion-aware offspring this she will chirp me for at least one business week. I too find it extremely weird to cheer for shoes. I wouldn’t even cheer for Fluevogs, and I *like* Fluevogs. They’re just shoes.

Sylvia Izzo Hunter @sylwrites.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Apparently that is what it means! I did not previously know this. It does not appear to mean anything significant—just “stupidly expensive shoes”.

Sylvia Izzo Hunter @sylwrites.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Like how do you cheer louder for a pair of repulsively expensive shoes than for HUDSON WILLIAMS, that’s crazy work

Someone on instagram just made fun of me for not knowing what it means to have red paint on the bottom of your shoes. (Context: Hudson Williams interview at TIFF.) Look it up, they said. You’ll understand why everyone was so excited. I looked it up. If anything, I now understand less than before 🤣

Telehealth used to be part of how people decided when to go to Emerg. If this is “system” is what we have now, folks must be showing up in Emerg just in case all the time. We almost did! Also feel terrible for the (too few) nurses working 811, who must get so many angry, frustrated ppl. 7/8

sent her back to bed. Spouse has already taken first dose of abx. A 811 nurse called me at 14:02. SEVENTEEN HOURS after I called 811. It is not her fault and she was very nice and I was very nice to her back (briefly explained outcome so she could log it and move on) but HOLY SHIT WTF DOUG. 7/n

Diagnosis: cellulitis. Redness up arms already receding, doctor approved of using Sharpie lines to monitor. Spouse couldn’t remember last tetanus shot so he got one, and we left with a scrip for antibiotics. Stopped at pharmacy and bakery (for bagels) on the way home. Debriefed Offspring then 6/n

and gave me the handoff report: 30-min temp checks from 01:22 onwards, and narrative reports on interactions during the night. Still no phone call. She went to bed, I woke up Spouse, and we set off to the clinic. Got there at 09:50, were third or fourth in line, talking to nurse by 10:50 5/n

decided to let him sleep. She took the night shift, with my phone’s ringer on for when the nurse called back, and I got some sleep. I woke up around 07:00 and checked in; the nurse had not called back but Offspring had found a nearby walk-in clinic opening at 10:00. She woke me again at 08:30 4/n

7 hours is a very long time but sure, yes please. Meanwhile I drew a Sharpie outline of the red areas on Spouse’s hand and arm, gave him some Tylenol and Gatorade, and started logging temperature checks. Offspring got home from a concert after midnight and we agonized about calling 911 but 3/n

I called them last night around 21:00 to ask for advice on what Offspring and I were pretty sure was an infected cut on Spouse’s finger. Spoke to a very nice person who said they had no medical training and couldn’t give us advice but would we like a callback from a nurse? In about 7 hours? 2/n

Once upon a time, Telehealth Ontario was great—you could call, wait a little, talk to an RN and get guidance for how to deal with your thing at home or advice to see your family doctor soon or go to Emerg immediately. Now we have this Doug Ford thing called 811, and it is … well. 1/n

Linoleum is awesome! My parents' linoleum kitchen floor was installed in the late 1970s and if it weren't for the very 1970s colour and pattern, it would look almost new.

Well, I hadn't heard about this book but now I have, and will be purchasing it, so hopefully I am not the only person! (I read the Cleves book back when it was new, so I would probably have read the graphic novel anyway if I spotted it. But now I'm mad!)
