📖 the tarot trials arc : ̗̀➛ ★★★☆☆ : ̗̀➛ available october 20th

The Tarot Trials on kindle next to a candle

Kestrel has been training her entire life to partake in the Tarot Trials. Her mother was a champion 22 years ago but was executed for treason. Now, she wants to take up her mother’s mantel & find out the truth of why she was killed. If she can be one of the last 5 standing, maybe she can find the truth she seeks & help those in the city.

Deadly trials based on tarot? I’m in!! Now im not the most knowledgeable when it comes to tarot & the deck itself. I don’t think you particularly need to know the different cards to read this but having knowledge of the cards would certainly help make the world building clearer. I was going with the flow until it started to make sense to me later.

I think the magic system is cool & unique. Without spoiling the pre trials if you will of how the champions are chosen was a concept I haven’t really seen before & enjoyed. And how it all tied in with the world building & lore felt really well thought out. It made reading everything seemless & make sense. It felt like we got the tip of the iceberg & in the next book we will dive more into detail hopefully.

However, I do think there was a little too much tell & not show for my taste. For example, the pre trials were just a summary of what every champion did to get chosen & a description of what they looked like as a way to introduce all the champions for when the main trials began. I know there’s a lot of people to go through but it felt like a check list & by the time we interact with these characters I forgot their descriptions altogether.

Overall this was a fun fast paced deadly trial fantasy book with a cool magic system. I wouldn’t say it leaves off on a cliffhanger but there are some unanswered questions about what will happen next with the results of the trials. Interested to see where book 2 goes but if you only care about the trials I can see this being able to be read as a standalone.

I have grown family members make comments about people being glued to their phones & how we should have a day every month of no electronics when me & my husband are on them for a sec at family events because they ignore us.. like maybe if you made an effort to talk to us Carl I wouldn’t be bored

Listen I don’t have a dog in this race but did I really see a comment about how the actors of a book adaptation aren’t the same height at the book characters? Are we fr?

[for arcs] It feels like they want the free book but don’t want to put the effort in writing the review. If it’s just in general just don’t write a review if you don’t want to??

📖 a reunion to die for arc : ̗̀➛ ★★★★☆ : ̗̀➛ available october 20th

A reunion to die for cover on a kindle in a pile of grass

It’s been 20 years since the disastrous prom night that’s changed the lives of a group of high school students. Now, they come face to face at their high school reunion. Everyone has their own version about what happened that night & nobody wants their secret getting out.

The story starts out as a “what happened” & turns into a “whodunit” as secrets & things get revealed. For me the duel timeline, multipov really trickled out the information to the reader in a way that left me wanting more. I absolutely could not put this book down as each chapter would end on a cliffhanger then swap to a new pov. This is a slow burn through & through.

As the book progressed I was able to predict certain aspects of our main cast which isn’t inherently a bad thing. I found some of what I predicted was twisted in a way I wasn’t expecting & left me pleasantly surprised while other reveals fell a little flat.

The characters didn’t have any likability. I didn’t care about any of them, some more than others. But when kept me going was the plot & uncovering the mysteries.

This book touches over some heavy topics in our characters backstories (tw: drug abuse, sexual abuse, homelessness) but overall the tone of the book is a cozy mystery with little depth. The plot & timelines were easy to understand & the bite sized chapters make this a fast read.

Thank you to NetGalley & the publishers for the arc!!

The cover of The Witch of the Wood by Alex Larkspur. It features two men in a dark and gloomy forest. Milo stands in front, a man with tan skin and short, dark hair. He’s dressed in a cream tunic and a green cloak around his shoulders. He has a bow and arrows. He is clearly afraid as he stares at his left hand. His fingers are blackened due a curse that is spreading across his hand. Another man, Cam, is turned the other way and holding Milo’s right hand. He’s looking over his shoulder and looking at Milo with concern. His clothes are bright, colorful, and patchwork. The gloom of the forest mutes their color. The trees seem to close in around them.
