I read other things too, but at this point I just always have it loaded on my kindle and as soon as I get to the end I start over. Nothing else hits the same note.

Agreed, it was fine but we thought it was overhyped. I thought How to Get to Heaven from Belfast did the comedy/horror thing much better.

I remember learning in grad school (econ PhD in the mid-late 2000s) that the labor/capital split in output was roughly 2/3 vs. 1/3 and that was, if not quite a law of nature, a relatively stable fact. Times have changed.

My first round criteria for a car is that I can adjust the seatbelt so that it doesn’t cut across my neck- and I’m 5’6”. You’d be shocked how many fail that stage.

He's a sitting senator, he could call up an expert on anything he wants at any time of day, and they will all drop everything to answer his questions. I just don't understand why an LLM is preferable.

Reddit is all astroturfed marketing now too. Retailer sites (Sephora/ulta) are mostly incentivized (ie free product programs). Quince straight up doesn’t post any bad reviews. there is nowhere left with unbiased product reviews at scale.

IDC about this debate, but to be clear, yes, the vast majority of the public have never been to an academic conference. That doesn’t mean we need to make conferences kinder (idk, maybe we do, separate q), but at a very basic level we absolutely do need to adjust to speak to general audiences.

Real answer: scarcity, property rights, trade all super common themes in sci-fi (firefly is a good one off the top of my head) Fun answer: I wanted to write about Sauron and the Nazgûl as organized crime hierarchy/ state power as an undergrad, but the prof vetoed it 🙁

I ventured into my first points card last year (previously maxed cashback) but now I’m struggling to get good payoff from the points so they’re just accumulating. Bad timing for big international trips (job mkt), how else can I spend them with good payoff?

Definitely. I think the vodka sauce was also a big improvement over marinara for this, but I can’t remember if it had both.

I’m just a TA, not a prof. But the simple answer is that we often do! However only some of them are very obvious, other times it can be borderline and those situations become frustrating and difficult.

But without doing the math out on longterm personnel costs here (benefits, pensions, etc) or looking at service impacts (e.g. revenues, audits), it's really difficult to evaluate that trade-off at the margin (making a general point abt gov staffing, even though IRS was/is under-resourced) /2

It's worth highlighting that with staff downsizes, either you 1) have fewer people doing the same aggregate amount of work, leading to overtime increases like this, or 2) you just accomplish less aggregate work, leading to service impacts like I find in SSA under Reagan. /1

I wonder how much of this is driven by a shift in revenue source for artists- they used to make money selling records, and went on tour to promote record sales. Now streaming makes zilch and the music is meant to promote the tour (except the market there is losing profitability).
