Constructing artificial agents operating with unmeasurable uncertainty. The project aims to develop new methods to help digital systems make decisions when there is too little data to rely solely on probabilities. This kind of uncertainty occurs, for instance, where human behaviour or unfamiliar terrain is unpredictable. Expected outcomes of this project include tools for building and checking decision-making systems using ideas from mathematics and computer science. This should provide a unique benefit for the automatic design of systems that do not have access to enormous amounts of data --- a critical aspect that few AI approaches can handle --- and so should support advances in robotics and automated planning, and strengthen Australia’s contribution to foundational research in intelligent systems. This projects aim to research the fundamental problem of secure distributed computing in open Internet, where network condition maybe unstable and even under attacks. Existing deployed protocols are all assuming certain good network conditions and thus will become vulnerable when moving to the open Internet. The research outcomes will include secure distributed consensus and computing protocols that will remain secure and efficient in open network. With those protocols, all services (including many mission critical ones) now maintained by distributed systems will continue offer security and resilience, and could also enable broader access to new services which now may only be maintained in in-house environments.

Better Distributional Fit Does Not Improve Reachable Coverage Estimation in Fuzzing

Abstract—The effectiveness of a fuzzing campaign is assessed
by program coverage. In complex real-world programs, the total
reachable coverage is unknown, making it difficult to determine
when fuzzing has sufficiently explored the program. Existing
approaches use non-parametric estimators, but these can be
inaccurate and unstable, often overestimating the coverage.
Parametric estimators offer an alternative by assuming an un-
derlying distribution for coverage discovery, potentially improving
accuracy and stability, yet remain largely unexplored in fuzzing.
We evaluate parametric models for coverage discovery by
fitting Poisson, Exponential, Gamma, Gamma–Poisson, Negative
Binomial, and Zipf–Mandelbrot distributions on our real-world
and synthetic benchmark programs. Our results show that
coverage discovery is highly heterogeneous and heavy-tailed across
the analyzed subjects. The Zipf–Mandelbrot model gives the best
fit for eight of the twelve subjects, and the Gamma–Poisson
model best fit for the remaining four. However, although Zipf–
Mandelbrot and Gamma–Poisson fit better than other model
families, their estimators show no accuracy advantage over the
other non-parametric estimators used in the experiment. This is
a negative result: modeling coverage discovery more accurately
does not translate into better reachable-coverage estimates.

🎉 Feiyang Chen, Danushka Liyanage, Xi Wu, and Rahul Gopinath's paper "Dr. DD: 1-Minimal Isolation of Failure Causes via Deferred Restarts" was accepted at #ISSRE26! #deltadebug #softwaretesting #inputminimization 🔗 ISSRE: cyprusconferences.org/issre2026/ 📝 Paper: rahul.gopinath.org/resources/is...
Abstract of the paper: Delta debugging is a widely used algorithm to reduce
failure-inducing inputs in software testing. It guarantees 1-
minimality but suffers from quadratic worst-case complexity due
to repeated restarts at every partition level, limiting its scalability.
Re-examining ddmin, we show that restarts are only required
at the single-element level to preserve 1-minimality. Restarts are
redundant at coarser granularities and can be deferred without
affecting the 1-minimality guarantee. We further show that the
quadratic worst case arises from causal chains, not from restarts.
These insights lead to drdd, a drop-in replacement for ddmin
that preserves 1-minimality while avoiding unnecessary restarts.
drdd also exposes a restart budget R, allowing a trade-off
between minimality and linear worst-case performance.
We evaluate drdd on ffmpeg, XML, binutils, and
crashjs inputs. On XML inputs, drdd reduces oracle calls
to 1.7% of ddminY and achieves a 6.0× speedup, and shows the
largest wall-clock speedup on crashjs. drdd performs well
when reduction is possible and shows smaller gains on inputs
with limited or no reducibility. Across all subjects, drdd matches
the reduction quality of ddminY and avoids the degradation
observed in ProbDD and CDD.

Title: Distributed Gaussian Mean Testing under Communication Constraints: messages, samples, and coins

Abstract: We revisit the problem of Gaussian mean testing in a distributed, communication constrained setting, where each of n users independently observes samples from an unknown d-dimensional spherical Gaussian distribution 𝒢(𝝁,𝕀d), and can communicate up to ℓ bits to a central referee. The referee’s goal is then to distinguish between cases (i) ‖𝝁‖2=0 versus (ii) ‖𝝁‖2≥ε. This problem has been considered in the private- and public-coin settings, when each user holds exactly one sample, or more generally when each holds exactly m samples. In this work, we significantly generalize the question in three directions: when the users only share a small number s of random bits, when each user holds a different number of samples mk, and when each user can send a different number of bits ℓk to the referee.

Title: Entropy Equivalence Testing

Abstract: We introduce the problem of entropy equivalence testing for probability distributions, a relaxation of the well-studied closeness testing problem, where the distribution testing algorithm is now only required to distinguish, given samples from two unknown distributions p,q and a parameter ε∈(0,1/2], between p=q and |H(p)−H(q)|⩾ε (where H denotes the Shannon entropy). We provide a time- and sample-efficient algorithm for this task, showing that the optimal sample complexity for this task can be significantly lower than that of closeness testing. As an application, we leverage this result to provide the first non-trivial testing algorithm for (standard) closeness of low-degree Bayesian networks, which significantly improves on either the sample or time complexity of a baseline based on full learning.
