It is crazy that UK broadband suppliers are still able to increase monthky prices by 33% dueing the life of a contract. It's also absurd that they're not mandated to give an average monthly price over the life of the cobtract for comparison purposes. The […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

In other news ... Here's a pile of Sun and other stuff sitting unloved in my garage. I'm not sure any of this is actually ever going to get used again at this point . The two blue boxes at the top are an SGI Indy and a DEC Alphastation ... Classics of their […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

How are ads for things like this making it into Youtube without it being detected? Nobody's going to sell you a USB storage device with 32Tb of space and 5000MB/s data transfer for £39 ...

Related to the post about USB-SCSI adapters (fosstodon.org/@sxa/1174180027838742…) I have a few - now ancient - IBM PS/2 model 95s which used SCSI drives. Some with Pentium 60 CPUs, some 486. Most aren't fully starting up at the moment (looking for […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

When taking a picture of a web page I usually use the OS screenshot tool. I hadn't realised (Maybe it didn't do this in the past) that the built-in firefox screenshot functionality uses it's knowledge of the DOM to let you highlight and select blocks from the […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

Frustrating. Sharp "Smart TV" is no longer smart. Built-in obsolescence. Likely no support outside the manufacturer who have given up. Smart TV is a gimmick. The sane option is going back to external devices (Fire sticks are the best end user solution here […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

The issue with Big Tech ... This is a screenshot from trying to log into #Meta #Facebook from one device I have. It gets stuck in a loop at the #Google (!) #reCaptcha Let's be realistic, neither of the two companies involved are ever going to give me any idea […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

Nine hundred and sixty. The number of partners that this site is sharing your information with to provide targetted ads. When I looked a few years ago there were a few close to 1000 - perhaps I need to run those checks again. Al;though kudos for making the […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

On a related note I'm not a fan of obtuse "System Apps" being top of my most used apps list... Been doing a bit of GitHub, Slack, Navigation with Waze in the background bit the random background shit is still top. Par for the course these days with "free" […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

Geez it got more ridiculous. I requested a balance check afterwards and it put MB in twice. I couldn't make this up, so here's the screenshot ... #O2

"AI: The amplifier of software development practice" (whether good or bad) I quite like this slide from that youtube video. The source of the conclusions leading to this diagram appear to be from this report […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]
A small cartoon showing "Good practice" on the left and "Poor practice" on the right with various examples and suggesting that whether things are better or bad with AI depends on which side you're on - either way it will amplify what you already have.

I then tried to attach a tablet to the screen over HDMI to stream Channel 4 and that was thwarted as per screenshot. I'd seen this years ago but had hoped it wasn't still the case. Plugging the laptop into the HDMI port allowed me to play it. On that basis […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

At least one of them has an ethernet (AUI/coax - pictured) MCA board but most were just token ring. Here's the MAU (equivalent to an ethernet hub) that they used to talk to one another. Random fact: I bought a second hand HP LaserJet 4 at one point and it had a […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]

I think it's finally time to take down my #IBM "IBM PS/2 Model 95" bar area. They made awesome table legs. Can't really justify keeping it in the dining room ... One final photo though #retroComputing 😁🍻🍸🥂♥️

In the office today (because not having Aircon was horrible for a Scotsman like me in over 30°C heat!) Met up with an ex-colleague who I'd noticed last time I was here had some #RedHat caps on the window to their office so I've managed to secure a replacement […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]
