I was a mid-level blogger in the 2000s & a few years ago met a news figure I'd written about often. She said, "I don't follow blogs, but I do have one question - what happened to Glenn Greenwald?" It's possible that I'm imagining this, but I do think he said "backside" as least once, regarding Mark Aguirre after his sidekick announcer said Aguirre's team thought he had a lot of upside. Chick's reply, more or less: "If his upside is as big as his backside, he's going to be pretty good."

That was my hunch, too. The implication from the Clips and the NBPA at the time of the ESPN article was that both would fight any penalties tooth and nail. Silver et al. realized, "what if we buy off the NBPA?"

Updating/correcting this based on subsequent reports that (despite the Clippers' statement), no arbitration is available for the team... maybe they thought/hoped that the NBPA would object, but Silver et al. struck a good enough deal regarding Kawhi that the players' union pulled the chair on them?

Just guessing, but both the Clips & the NBPA signaled their intention to fight any adverse rulings. Seems like Silver et al. found a compromise w/the players' association (hinted at when Kawhi dropped Uncle Dennis), but couldn't do so with the Clips, so they'll have to fight that out in arbitration.

I think the separation here is draft picks/players who blossomed with your team versus poaching other teams' established stars/superstars ("Yay, they're wearing my team's laundry now!") No idea how you operationalize that perfectly, but I can buy into rewarding the former over the latter.
