first time I used blender to fully model the installation around a 3D scan of the dancefloor from last year. 100s of hours of work, but soo worth it in terms of coming prepared and being able to do a lot of the programming and jamming ahead of time 👩‍💻

what do you find is smoother about it?

I am considering it but the margins aren't great, I'd need to charge $150/yr at least for it to be worth it until I reach economies of scale, and I'm not sure that people would pay that. High quality archiving is hard and takes like 1min/URL of CPU and burns a lot of IPs.

hi! I can't see OP's post but yes ArchiveBox is a nonprofit. I do some consulting so I can pay my bills and keep writing open source.

it’s fun when @sweeting.me comes over because it’s the only time i get to chaotically switch between english, chinese, and spanish

correction* the stat() call is always necessary for the check, but the os.path.* methods ignore the exceptions and return False for those cases

well it launched in 2015 so there was still a chance haha

🤷‍♂️ the cost of doing business when there's no official migration tool to make it smoother

Started migrating to Bsky today! History should appear in the next few days. (Will probably be on both platforms for a bit still though.)

I'm asking about default passive focal length mid-session, not what they do when you "attend" to them. "up close" ~feels like focusing on a black sheet held a few feet in front of you "far away" ~feels like a 1000-yard stare into a distant overcast night sky

has anyone tried making multiplayer pacman? A bunch of real people operating the ghosts in a groupchat who try to team up to beat a real human playing as pacman?

Man it's really annoying that python's otherwise-awesome pathlib.Path breaks in a bunch of cases where os.access works fine. Path().is_dir(), .is_file(), .exists() all unecessarily call .stat() and break occasionally, when os.access(...) or os.path.isdir(), etc. work fine.

In fact I think I just got rate limited by PyPI because I got overexcited about being able to release things faster...

Nick Sweeting @sweeting.me · 05/10/2024
Ok this is kind of absurd. I just switched over @ArchiveBoxApp to uv, and it ran our typically ~1 min build+publish in under 2 seconds. It's singlehandedly making me want to stay on python compared to JS. 👏 👏@charliermarsh @astral_sh amazing job

I kinda miss the "Hi this is Visa Mastercard" scam guys anyone still get those calls? I'd just keep trying to ask them "so which one are you?" in different ways for like 30min

Stay far away from @portalbridge_ , I've tried to swap tokens 3 times now and all three times it eats the gas fees, does no swap, and support doesn't help at all.

Finally updated my coding workflow to modern tools, highly recommend if you've been putting it off: - Google Chrome -> Brave - Google Search -> Kagi - Sublime Text -> VSCode - GPT-4o -> Claude 3.5 - Copilot -> Cody + Tabnine - node -> bun - mypy -> pywrigt - Bootstrap -> Ant 5

I'm consistently surpised at how much better Claude 3.5 is at generating code that works on the first try compared to GPT-4o Not a single hallucination in sight...

Assassination as a Tool of Foreign Policy
In light of some recent discussions, I thought I'd repost...

Nick Sweeting @sweeting.me · 06/08/2024
an interesting counter-argument to using assassination as a tool of foreign policy: autocrats already assume their position entails risk. it disproportionately harms democracies because fewer/worse ppl will run for office when it has higher...

I've decided to make all my projects run as if they are in a prod environments by default, at the expense of new dev onboarding ux. I've seen too many prod servers started in insecure dev modes due to missing or broken ENV vars in a yaml file, causing fallback to dev defaults.

Hey @GoPro how is it possible that it's 2024 and your cameras still: - reset the time to 2016 every time you remove the battery - fail to add GPS location to 90% of videos I take - constantly create video files with duplicate names - fail to charge / self-discharge randomly

@GoogleChromeDev Are they really trying to repeat the Netscape antitrust lawsuit from 2001? This is brazen anti-competitive behavior being forced at the browser layer...

whaaaaat are you doing @GoogleChromeDev team It's showing a "Sign in to quora with google.com" popup while I'm looking at chrome://settings !!! This is wild, it's the first time I've seriously considered switching to Safari, just to get away from these popups

Nick Sweeting @sweeting.me · 09/05/2024
These are driving me insane, disabling them in Google Account settings and Chrome settings doesn't work, and they're not part of the page HTML so adblock doesn't work. How do I stop this madness?!

Is it just me or is the iPad CPU comically overpowered? I don't think iOS apps have been CPU constrained in years, and there's an artificial floor on responsiveness imposed by animation delays so they never "feel faster"

could they sue you for patent infringement for doing this in your own home?

I cant wait till we can do full active<->active SQL replication between server & client WASM-based SQLite.js (OPFS) / PGLite. The future is so exciting. Screw redux and all the other state management libs, they've served us well but it's time for SQL on the frontend!

I feel like any new language gets 5 years of waffling before they are expected to put their foot down and choose a recommended packaging flow. "we'd rather not implement that in case it offends XYZ subgroup, you can always write your own alternative" is less cool after 21 years
